T T Emma Bailey “I genuinely love solving people’s problems. I enjoy it when a customer comes in and I can help them find the exact right thing for the job.” For more than 25 years, Toolshed Timaru has been a familiar and trusted part of the local community. The business moved to its current home at 34 North Street, Timaru, in 2000 and has continued to thrive there ever since. Originally Mark Mattingley owned and operated Toolshed Timaru. Johnny joined his father in the business in 1997 and quickly discovered a genuine passion for sales and customer service, so much so that Johnny and his wife Pam purchased the business in 2010. “I genuinely love solving people’s problems. I enjoy it when a customer comes in and I can help them find the exact right thing for the job.” That passion for helping people is a big part of what makes Toolshed Timaru special. Family is at the heart of the wider Toolshed Group, the group is owned by brothers Graeme and Wayne Giles, who work alongside their families across all areas of the business. With 25 stores throughout New Zealand, the Toolshed Group has grown considerably, but the family values remain. Johnny is particularly proud of the long-serving staff at the Timaru store, who have helped maintain that same family atmosphere over the years. “Both my sons had jobs here after school as cleaners and even though the company has grown, there is still a family feel. It’s important to me to treat staff like family.” That sense of loyalty goes both ways. When Johnny faced one of the biggest challenges of his life, his team proved just how much that family feeling meant. At 40, Johnny was diagnosed with a brain tumour and at 41 he underwent major brain surgery. He was unable to work for three months while he recovered, leaving his loyal team to take care of the store. “I was off work for three months afterwards. I was so lucky to have excellent staff looking after the place. As a person who manages the business, you worry the place will burn down without you, however the staff handled it incredibly.” Community is another important part of Johnny’s approach to business. Every year, Toolshed Timaru gives away a garden shed full of tools — a tradition they have proudly continued for the past 25 years. Last year’s winners were a family with two children, and it was a particularly memorable moment for everyone involved. Toolshed Timaru has also donated tools through Tools for Toys, working with the Salvation Army, and organised customers’ tools to be donated to the Solomon Islands. One time Johnny ran a trade event competition to assemble 15 picnic tables that were then donated to 15 kindergartens. Toolshed is also continuing to expand its own product range, with products being imported directly from manufacturers. One of the brands making an impact is TRUXON, which has already proven extremely popular with customers. By purchasing directly from manufacturers, Toolshed can reduce the number of intermediaries involved and help keep prices competitive. After decades at the heart of Toolshed Timaru, Johnny’s passion for the business remains as strong as ever — whether that’s helping someone find the perfect tool, supporting his staff, or giving back to the community that has supported him throughout the years. For everything you need, head to 34 North Street, Timaru, and visit Johnny and the team at Toolshed Timaru.
