Proudly Supporting Beachside Sumner Sumner development progressing well The mixed-use development is being delivered as six distinct buildings incorporating 57 premium apartments, commercial space, underground parking and an extensive range of resort-style amenities One of Christchurch’s most significant coastal residential developments is continuing to take shape, with Beachside Sumner progressing across its prominent beachfront site between Marriner Street and The Esplanade. The mixed-use development is being delivered as six distinct buildings incorporating 57 premium apartments, commercial space, underground parking and an extensive range of resort-style amenities. Designed to sit comfortably within the established Sumner environment, the development combines higher-density residential living with generous landscaping, shared spaces and direct connections to the surrounding village and waterfront. Construction is being led by Devcorp, with the project now becoming increasingly visible from the street. The first building, Anchorage, has reached an important stage, with sections of scaffolding coming down and the building’s architectural form beginning to emerge. Internally, work has been progressing across tiling, flooring and kitchen installation. At the same time, Building 2 is rising from the ground, following completion of its foundation works, while planning and design for subsequent stages is progressing. Anchorage occupies the important corner of Marriner St and The Esplanade, and has been conceived as a sculptural response to its coastal location. Its distinctive curved form and generous balconies reference the natural patterns of the coastline while maximising views, sunlight and outdoor living. The wider 4182sqm development has been arranged around a landscaped shared courtyard, with the six buildings positioned to encourage light, airflow and privacy, while creating opportunities for interaction between residents. A major part of the Beachside proposition is the level of amenity being delivered alongside the residences. Plans include a heated swimming pool, spa, sauna, gym and landscaped communal areas, together with secure basement parking, surf board storage and facilities supporting e-bikes and electric vehicles. The development will also contribute to Sumner at street level, rather than operating solely as a residential enclave. Commercial hospitality space is incorporated into the project, with plans for an Italian restaurant and deli to activate the ground floor and landscaped public edge as people enter Sumner Village. The latest progress represents another significant step for a development that has required considerable collaboration between its construction, design, engineering and consultant teams. With Anchorage approaching its finished architectural appearance and the next building now taking shape, Beachside is moving from an ambitious waterfront masterplan to a highly visible new part of the Sumner landscape. Positioned directly opposite the beach and within walking distance of Sumner’s established hospitality and retail offering, the development is ultimately designed to combine the convenience of apartment living with the character and lifestyle that have long made the seaside suburb one of Christchurch’s most sought-after locations.
