Jack says there was a thorough process in entering the awards. “It’s probably bigger than what most people realise, and it comes at a cost to enter, and the extra time it takes to get the houses to the level. But I just think it’s a great challenge and it keeps myself and the team striving to get the best outcome out of the job we’re working on and keeps the standard really high.” He says it gives the clients confidence in the company and himself as the owner, showing that the team is doing a great job. “I do like the challenge of it and putting myself out there. To have a go and see how we compare against the region and the country.” Gibson Builders has been operating for around six years, starting out with Jack doing “odd jobs”. Before that, he worked at a qualified builder and branch manager for a successful company based in Timaru and Twizel. From there, Jack set up his own company. “And basically did anything really that came my way – decks, fences, renovations.” That led to a new build, and he employed a staff member. Today, he is supported by six builders on the team and two admin staff. “We went from doing two houses a year to maybe six now.” The majority of work is new residential and architectural builds, mainly in Wanaka, but also stretching to Hawea. Each build is bespoke in its own way, Jack says. “We’re dealing with the clients from the very early stages of finding them a section to them moving into their house, and working with the architect to design something that suits their budget and what they’re wanting. You get to know the people really well.” Jack says while the company is expanding, it is focusing on remaining sustainable. “It’s a juggle to not overdo it and then ruin what you’ve got. We’re definitely expanding, but not looking to get too out of control. I still want to have my finger on everything and keep the quality and the standard there that’s got us to this point.” A quantity surveyor is joining the team and will work within the company right through the build process. “So that’s going to be a real game changer for me,” says Jack. He says there are plenty of exciting projects coming up for the team. “So there seems to be a lot of work around and hopefully by winning these awards, we can run off that as well.” T T from page 86
