Campbell Builder’s residential projects in Queenstown for more than two decades. Founded by director Andrew Campbell, the Queenstown company has evolved from building homes for individual clients to purchasing land, designing homes specifically for each section and then constructing them. Working alongside long-standing architectural practice, every home is bespoke designed. “We purchase the land, design it to be what the market is after, then build it. Every site is actually designed to capture the sun, the views and the way people live. We make every house specific to the site.” That approach has also helped create a consistent workflow through changing economic cycles. Because the company controls the process from land purchase through to design and construction, it can adapt projects to suit different parts of the market, whether they are intended for owner-occupiers, investors, holiday-home buyers or first-home purchasers. “We can design a house that suits what people want. Whether it’s a rental, long-term accommodation, a holiday home or somewhere to live, we can design the build, the finish and the price to get the best result for that individual site.” A home in Taurus Lane at Jacks Point reflects that philosophy. The 270sqm residence combines a three-bedroom family home with a separate two-bedroom self-contained apartment, Absolute Homes Going great in Darfield The heart of the home is a standout area, where the kitchen, dining and living spaces feature raised ceilings formed with scissor trusses. T T from page 93 giving owners the flexibility to accommodate extended family, create an additional income stream or simply open the home into one larger residence. The design places the main living areas upstairs to capture year-round sunshine, mountain views and privacy, while the bedrooms are positioned below. Two living areas, generous kitchen and dining spaces, a double garage, attic storage and private outdoor living areas are complemented by a separate apartment with its own entrance, outdoor space and parking. “For us, the challenge is producing a home of the highest level that still fits within the current market value and is achievable for people to get into.” The advantages of architectural design extend well beyond appearance. Every floor plan is developed to respond to its surroundings, taking into account sun angles throughout the year, neighbouring buildings, privacy, views and the relationship between indoor and outdoor living spaces. “We can factor in all those different parts of living in the original design, so you maximise every outcome.” The Taurus Lane home also demonstrates the company’s emphasis on quality. On the outside, the home combines James Hardie Axon Panel Smooth with Hardie Axent Trim and a designer clay brick from Brickworks’ San Selmo range. “Receiving Silver and Bronze recognition in itself was a fantastic acknowledgement of the quality of the two builds,” Jade says. She says the team will “absolutely” be entering the awards again. “We see the awards as something we’d like to continue being part of. Receiving silver and bronze has certainly given us something to build on – now we’re chasing Gold!” She says there are some exciting builds coming up that could be put forward in the future. In its first five years in business, the family-owned business has grown to 26 staff and has completed more than 100 builds across the Canterbury region. Darfield is experiencing a boom in housing development and Absolute Homes is working across several key subdivisions, including Darfield Estates, Torlesse Estate, Ryelands and Kersey Park. The team is also supporting clients building in the new Landsbrough development, located just out of town on Kimberley Road. She says the projects involved many people, and not just those at the front of the business. “Our designers, project team, suppliers, subcontractors and trades all contribute to the finished product, so receiving that recognition is something which the whole team can take pride in.” She says the Darfield home was a particularly special project, as it gave the team the opportunity to incorporate a number of architectural features and more bespoke detailing throughout the build. The 259sqm home across two levels is a substantial build, but a lot of thought went into making the spaces feel connected and considered rather than simply focusing on size. The heart of the home is a standout area, where the kitchen, dining and living spaces feature raised ceilings formed with scissor trusses. MDF ceiling linings with CNC grooves and battened joints in these spaces added another layer of architectural interest and texture. Interior features include built-in joinery, a window seat, and built-in TV unit and bar/ pantry, alongside polished concrete flooring in the dining area. The power of the written word.
