Working alongside Apollo Projects in the design and build of the high pro le Christchurch Engine Centre expansion project is a trusted name in mechanical services across the South Island - DBC Building Services. Founder David Browne – now 76 and still very active at DBC - established the company from the ground up to become a frontrunner in quality heating, ventilation and air conditioning services, as well as plumbing and drainage and the delivery of medical and laboratory gas pipeline systems. Through the years, the company has quadrupled its annual turnover to more than $60 million a year. “This latest project is large in scale and technically complex,” says Project Manager/Director Tim Browne, who rst joined his father in the family business 28 years ago. “It involves a lot of planning, coordination and BIM modelling, with seismic considerations coming into it too. We started working on it a year and a half ago, working alongside Apollo Projects through the design and consenting phase. We’re now starting on site doing the under-slab drainage for plumbing before the foundations are poured. By October, we’ll be starting to install the large, 1700mm-diametre round ducting for the maintenance facility.” DBC Building Services makes all ducting for complex projects like this, operating out of their own specialist custom manufacturing and sheet metal fabrication facilities. “We keep it as much in-house as we can and employ our own sta . We currently have more than 200 sta , including 13 apprentices/interns, across Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin. If there’s any problem, we’ll get it sorted.” DBC Building Services has designed ventilation for the main maintenance space as part of this Christchurch Engine Room project to provide e cient heating and cooling and is also delivering heat recovery and ventilation services for new o ces, plus plumbing for shower and toilet facilities. As well, DBC will be providing mechanical and air compression services for the new engine testing facility, with re safety a key priority in the design. “This is very specialised work; we’re working to an international template based on rigorous US standards that we need to achieve, as well as complying with the New Zealand Building Code.” DBC’s working relationship with the airport goes back almost 20 years, to the days when the business was still trading as David Browne Contractors. “We were working on the domestic services building upgrade at the time of the 2011 earthquake - actually, I was there on site as it happened!
