Opened on August 11, the 720sqm supermarket - owned by Gaylene and Paul Thompson - is twice the size of the existing one. Carrfields developed the site after having discussions within the community several years ago, and now in conjunction with the NPD the town has a petrol station and a supermarket in one convenient location. The FreshChoice supermarket was the latest design in New Zealand under the new Woolworths branding, and its eco-friendly refrigeration is just one of the features that will be replicated throughout the country at other new stores. The Thompsons have been with SuperValue for 21 years, and are excited by the change. “This new store is a dream come true – nine years in the making and three years to bring to reality,” Paul says. “We started this journey with Gaylene’s parents and are incredibly proud to continue serving our community in this fantastic new space. Our customers’ support made this possible, and we’re excited to offer them a truly elevated shopping experience.” The accessibility, parking and bigger range of products – about 30% more, also means an expanded bakery section, in-store thick shake machine and ready-to-eat hot food option. Carrfields Holdings general manager - family office & investments, Graeme Wilkins says Calder Stewart were fantastic to deal with, and says the building went to plan with very few challenges along the way. “It’s gone very smooth, and was a fantastic four-way partnership between the owner/developer, Calder Stewart, the tenants and Progressive.” Calder Stewart regional manager Donald Sutton says he has been involved with Carrfields since the mid-1990s, and the company was his single biggest client in the area. “We’re all a close-knit group and work well together,” he says. In building the new supermarket, FreshChoice used their knowledge about what’s been done in the past, he says. The only challenge along the way was the weather – with plenty of rain slowing down construction. “It was a bit of an issue but we gave ourselves a good time frame to build it in,” Graeme says. He says Calder Stewart had a good plan in place right from the get go. Marketing manager Laurence Lefebvre says the project’s complexity lay not in its scale, but in its precision requirements. “Each element needed exact positioning to complement the building’s features. Coordination with Calder Stewart and the site team was easy, and helped ensure timely installation and adaptability and flexible problem-solving approaches.” She says the Tinwald project is an example of how Astrolift integrates with the construction team to deliver seamless, no-fuss outcomes.
