56 | Marking the way for traffic safety With a line-up of cutting-edge equipment and a skilled team of over 70, Spray Marks operates across the South Island and beyond T T Rosa Warson Spray Marks NZ CONTRACTING From its beginnings in the heart of Canterbury, Spray Marks has grown into one of New Zealand’s leading independent providers of road marking and traffic management solutions. With decades of experience under its belt, the company has built a reputation on reliability, innovation, and community focus. “Spray Marks is more than just lines on the road. It’s a company that connects people, places, and progress,” managing director Darcy Prendergast says. Since its beginnings in 1989, Spray Marks has grown from a small road marking business into one of the South Island’s leading providers of traffic management and safety solutions. Over the years, the company has marked nearly every road in the region at least once, and installed thousands of edge marker posts and reflective cat’s eyes – a legacy that continues to stand the test of time. The 1990s marked the start of a new era for the company, with the launch of its sign manufacturing division and the introduction of traffic management services in Christchurch. Growth continued in 2006 with the acquisition of Roadmarkers Otago, expanding its reach even further. Today, with bases in Ashburton and Christchurch, Spray Marks offers what Darcy describes as a “full suite of services”. This includes road marking for highways, urban streets, car parks, and airports, as well as specialist markings for cycle lanes, school zones, playgrounds, sports courts, custom stencils, and coloured surfacing. The company also provides complete traffic management solutions, from the preparation of TTM plans and supply of qualified control staff to the hire of equipment such as signs, cones, electronic devices, and fleet vehicles. Safety infrastructure remains another cornerstone of its work, with services including road sign installation, tactile studs and bars, edge marker posts, and guardrail installation and maintenance. With decades of experience and a reputation for delivering high-quality, reliable solutions, Spray Marks continues to play a vital role in shaping safer roads and public spaces across the South Island and beyond. With a line-up of cutting-edge equipment and a skilled team of over 70, Spray Marks operates across the South Island and beyond. Having completed several international contracts in the Pacific, the company’s portfolio includes diverse locations, markets and industries. Its wide range of clients includes local councils, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, civil contractors, private developers and commercial enterprises. Spray Marks has been involved in largescale highway upgrades, airport runway markings, and innovative urban initiatives. Darcy says at the core of Spray Marks’ success are its values – solutions, innovation, delivery, and respect. “We are known for always turning up on time and delivering great solutions, unlike anyone else in the industry.” Supporting local initiatives and building long-term relationships has been a big part of the company’s ethos. “Since 1989, these values have driven our growth from a small regional operator to a national leader,” Darcy says. The road marking and traffic management industry is currently experiencing significant change, with the transition from CoPTTM (code of practice for temporary traffic management) to the NZGTTM (New Zealand guide to temporary traffic management) risk-based framework, marking a major shift in how traffic management is planned and delivered, Darcy says. “Alongside this, increasing demands for sustainability, digital integration, and smarter infrastructure continue to reshape the sector. Spray Marks has kept pace by embracing the transition to NZGTTM, ensuring safer, more flexible, and risk-based traffic management.” It has also invested in eco-friendly materials and sustainable practices, he says, implementing real-time traffic management systems for improved safety and efficiency, and providing ongoing training and development to equip its workforce to adapt confidently to evolving industry standards. As infrastructure and urban challenges grow, Darcy says Spray Marks is taking the lead with smart, safe, and sustainable solutions.
