T T Russell Fredric “The builder’s craftsmanship was exceptional, and with his wife being an interior designer, the collaboration was seamless.” Husk Design + Draft ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Two projects of vastly different scales embody Husk Design + Draft’s philosophy: a collaborative, detail-driven approach that delivers each client’s vision, regardless of size, scope, or brief. Based in Invercargill, the practice is owned and directed by architectural designer Josh and his wife Sarah. Husk’s portfolio spans the lower South Island, from Stewart Island’s coastline to the alpine landscapes of Twizel, reflecting an adaptability to site, climate, and client lifestyle, as well as a commitment to creating spaces that resonate with each client’s personality and day-to-day living needs. At one end of the scale of Husk’s completed projects is a compact 33sqm urban studio, at the other, a 340sqm family residence in rural Southland. “Each demonstrates Husk’s focus on proportion, flow, and a design that feels grounded yet refined,” Josh says. The studio, built by Duratec Construction, occupies the rear of an Invercargill section and was conceived as a versatile space, part entertainment hub with the inclusion of a bar, and part relaxation retreat for quiet moments by the cosy fire. Its clean, contemporary form is clad in vertical cedar, complemented by coloured-steel tray roofing pitched at 45 degrees. A subtle eyebrow detail below the gutter introduces a refined architectural accent, building on the strong lines. Inside, a raked ceiling features skylights that draw daylight deep into the room, while light-toned timber flooring contrasts with a deep-toned feature wall. “It’s quite a pared-back design, but the timber dark panelling introduces a welcome warmth,” says Josh, Outdoor living is an extension of the design, with Kwila decking and plastered concrete landscaping walls completing the year-round sanctuary. Thoughtful landscaping and connection to the outdoors reinforce a sense of calm and continuity throughout the site. In contrast, the family home, built by Botting Builders, Invercargill, with interiors by AB Interiors, commands an elevated site with sweeping northern views over rolling farmland. The design is organised into three interconnected pavilions, creating distinct zones for adults and children, while preserving a strong sense of connection. The west wing houses a dedicated children’s area, with three bedrooms, a bathroom, and generous storage. The central pavilion contains the open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space beneath a raked ceiling, with direct links to a media room and office, while the garage wing incorporates a home gym and storage for outdoor gear, underscoring the home’s lifestyle-driven layout. Husk Design + Draft was engaged early in the process, refining the concept designs through to detailed construction drawings and council consent. The result is a home with seamless flow, tailored zones for privacy and togetherness, and well-considered environmental comfort. Diesel-fuelled underfloor heating delivers consistent warmth, while a gas fire anchors the living space with both heat and atmosphere. The interiors reflect a balance of modern lines and tactile finishes, ensuring the home feels as welcoming as it is practical. Carefully chosen materials, natural light, and functional spatial planning enhance both comfort and aesthetic appeal. “We’re really happy with how it’s turned out, and most importantly, the clients are too,” says Josh. “The builder’s craftsmanship was exceptional, and with his wife being an interior designer, the collaboration was seamless.” Since Husk Design + Draft was established five years ago, it has grown to a team of four, with the addition of Sarah managing operations. Despite broader economic pressures in the building sector, the workload remains strong, thanks to word-of-mouth referrals and repeat clients. “We’ve got a fantastic team, work in with a great group of local builders and consider ourselves very fortunate,” Josh says. Josh and Sarah attribute the continued growth to a focus on delivering unique and exceptional design outcomes, each tailored to reflect its owner’s individuality, while consistently maintaining clear communication and strong client relationships throughout every project.
