As international companies reassess their place in New Zealand’s vegetable- processing sector, one homegrown business is making the opposite move, committing to a major expansion of its Ashburton operation. Season’s Best is undertaking the biggest investments in its vegetable and potato processing history, with a multi-stage redevelopment of its Ashburton facility set to more than double capacity across key product lines. The investment comes at a time of significant change for the sector, with global operators reducing their presence in New Zealand. For Season’s Best chief executive, Steve Koekemoer, the difference comes down to a willingness to invest, remain competitive, and support New Zealand growers. “The challenge is that the industry has fallen behind global competitors in efficiency and technology after years of underinvestment,” he says. “The choice is clear – exit the market or invest and compete. We have chosen to invest, because we believe New Zealand-grown products have a strong future, and local growers need processors who are prepared to back them.
