This year has been an exciting one for the company, taking home seven gold medals for seven wines at the prestigious London Wine Competition, and also being named New Zealand’s Winery of the Year. The remarkable clean sweep included gold medals for its 2023 Envoy by Spy Valley Sauvignon Blanc, 2024 Spy Valley Chardonnay and 2025 Spy Valley Sauvignon Blanc, firmly cementing the region’s reputation as a leading producer of wine. With more than 1300 wines judged by Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers and leading international wine buyers, the London Wine Competition is recognised as one of the world’s most respected wine competitions, making the achievement all the more significant. For Spy Valley owner and managing director, Amanda Johnson, the award is a reflection of decades of commitment to quality. “To be recognised on this stage is incredible. Family owned and operated for more than 30 years, Spy Valley’s vineyards sit on rugged gravelly and alluvial soils once considered too dry and unforgiving for grape growing. Today, those same free-draining soils, combined with low rainfall, abundant sunshine, warm days and cool nights, produce fruit renowned for its concentration, purity and vibrant flavour. Unlike many producers, Spy Valley is vertically integrated, managing every stage of production from growing and nurturing the vines through to winemaking, bottling and distribution. The end-to-end approach provides complete quality assurance from vine to glass while allowing the winery to maintain exceptional consistency across its portfolio of six varietals. Winemaker Emily Gaspard-Clark says the latest results demonstrate the breadth of the winery’s capabilities. “Achieving strong results across our Sauvignon Blanc range is fantastic. It’s equally rewarding to see this success reflected across our other varietals. Seven wines, seven golds across multiple styles show we’re here to do more than just one thing.” While international recognition is rewarding, the journey has not been without challenges. Like many Marlborough producers, Spy Valley has had to adapt to increasingly variable weather conditions while maintaining consistently high-quality fruit. Economic pressures across the global wine industry have also reinforced the importance of investing in quality, rather than compromising standards. Head of viticulture and winery operations, Adam McCone, says the recognition is especially meaningful given the effort required to establish the vineyards. We’ve poured heart and hard work into every stage, from vineyard to bottle, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see that effort recognised.” Looking ahead, Spy Valley’s ambition extends beyond awards.
