Pasture and soil management are also central to the system. Around half the farm is regrassed annually to maintain pasture quality, while fertiliser is applied carefully to match pasture demand. Animal management plays a role as well. Halter collars have been introduced to help manage stock in smaller groups, particularly during winter. “We run smaller mobs in the wet months so the cows aren’t making as much mud,” Bobby says. The approach helps reduce pugging and protects soil structure during challenging weather conditions. The farm also operates a closed herd to reduce biosecurity risk and is actively controlling invasive pest plant species. Entering the environmental awards was initially a simple decision rather than a carefully planned move. “My wife filled out the application and we thought we’d just have a go and see what happens,” Bobby says. The couple were surprised to progress through the judging rounds and become finalists. “We didn’t really expect to go anywhere in the awards,” he says. The process has nevertheless provided useful feedback from judges and an opportunity to assess the farm system more closely. “We thought it was a good chance to learn something and see how we were doing.” While the Deans remain focused on improving their farm business and reducing debt, the environmental work will continue to evolve alongside the production system. “We’re still very hands-on with the farm and just trying to improve things year by year.
