Karen Phelps At the heart of western Southland, the Flett family farm near Otautau is a story of both progress and people, where generations of farming knowledge meet a clear vision for the future. Now run day-to-day by siblings Brooke and Sam Flett, the 400-hectare dairy operation is undergoing a significant transformation. Once two separate farms, each with its own milking shed, it has been unified over time, with a centrally located shed and barn built in 2011 marking a key milestone. Today the focus has shifted to refining and improving the property to make it more efficient and resilient. “Restructuring the farm is about making it more user-friendly and improving cow flow to the shed,” explains Brooke. “We’re putting in new lanes, dividing up paddocks, installing culverts and refencing. It all helps create a smoother system.” Alongside this extensive drainage projects are under way to combat the challenges of wet conditions and to boost pasture growth. “The wet can be a real challenge here, so improving drainage has been a big priority,” says Brooke. “It makes a huge difference to pasture performance and how we manage the farm through the seasons.” While the physical changes are significant, the Fletts are clear that the farm’s success is not just about infrastructure or production. “The secret to running a successful operation lies in its people,” says Brooke. “Growing up, we were always taught that looking after the people involved in the business is just as important as anything else.” That philosophy is woven into daily life on the farm. With a team that includes several international agricultural workers, creating a sense of belonging is a priority. Regular shared meals play a central role, from staff breakfasts during calving to twice-weekly dinners prepared by their mother, Jane. “Food brings everyone together,” says Sam.
