Russell Fredric Known for its roots in the dairy industry, Cowley Electrical Dairy & Pumps has rebranded as Cowley, reflecting the broader scope of work the business now delivers across the region. Director Jared Cowley says the change recognises how the company has evolved while staying true to its rural foundations. “The rural sector is still at the heart of what we do, but our work has grown well beyond dairy sheds and traditional electrical services. The Cowley name better reflects the range of projects and integrated solutions we’re delivering today.” With around 40 staff and branches in Gore, Balclutha and Mosgiel, Cowley now operates across mechanical, electrical, engineering and refrigeration services, enabling it to take on complex, multidiscipline projects as either a subcontractor or main contractor. “Our teams cover electrical, mechanical, engineering fabrication and specialist refrigeration. That capability allows us to deliver fully integrated solutions or support projects with a single trade, depending on what the client needs.” That breadth is increasingly important as Cowley’s work extends beyond the farm gate into community and infrastructure projects for local authorities and the Ministry of Education. At Clutha Valley Primary School, Cowley was subcontracted to deliver all electrical supply and installation for a redevelopment valued at more than $10 million, including new wiring, switchboards, lighting, and heating systems. For Clutha District Council, Cowley was proud to deliver as the main contractor the Greenfield to Milton to Waihola Pump Stations project. The scope included civil, building, mechanical and electrical works, with four new pump stations and reservoirs constructed and installed as part of the Milton to Waihola and Tuapeka/Balmoral Water Schemes. Despite this growth, dairy farming and on-farm work remain a cornerstone of the business. Cowley works closely with Waikato Milking Systems to support farmers with new sheds, upgrades, and ongoing servicing. “We help farmers set up, maintain and improve their milking systems using practical solutions, smart automation, and reliable support.” This increasingly includes advanced monitoring systems, particularly around water and effluent management, where remote alerts and automated controls help farmers stay compliant and protect their environment. Cowley recently exhibited at the Southern Field Days at Waimumu, which provided a strong indicator of farmer confidence. “There was a really positive vibe. We saw strong enquiry for generators following the October windstorm, as well as interest from both domestic customers and dairy operators.” At the same time, Cowley’s growth has been driven by a strong focus on its people which is a strong focus for the business, with five apprentices currently employed and ongoing investment in both internal and external training. “Finding experienced tradespeople is challenging, so bringing people through apprenticeships is critical for us.” While proud of its agricultural roots, Cowley has grown into a trusted regional provider for infrastructure, council, and industrial projects. “Our strength is in our people.
