Owners Karen and Derek Furniss have been in the industry of fertiliser spreading for more than 30 years, taking over from Derek’s parents Leonee and Gordon Furniss who started the business over 40 years ago. It still reflects the family nature of the business with Karen and Derek being supported in Te Awamutu Bulk Spreaders by their daughter Nicole, who has worked as transport manager for several years and now coordinates truck movements and manages load planning to optimise trips and meet the varied needs of farmers across the region. Their oldest daughter Natalia is also showing an interest in the business and is now in her first season driving full-time after obtaining her truck and trailer licenses. Their son Jacob is completing a diesel mechanic apprenticeship, adding another key skill set to the family group. Alongside the family members, the company employs three full-time drivers and engages an engineer who works out of their workshop and helps Derek to maintain and improve the fleet. Derek is constantly changing and improving the machinery and has designed their articulated 4x4 spreading truck, known as “the Spider”. This truck remains one of Te Awamutu Bulk Spreaders’ biggest advantages on soft or sensitive ground. The truck bends behind the cab to slip through tight gateways and paddocks, and its tyre inflation system helps to prevent damaging emerging new grass. Derek’s push toward articulated trucks came from real-world challenges on farms where standard vehicles couldn’t reach the job. That thinking led to “the Spider,” which has been refined many times over. “There are jobs we simply couldn’t do without that truck,” Karen says. Another one of Derek’s innovative designs is their twin-binned side tipping trailers. It has the ability to load two trucks at once and within the combined truck and trailer unit it can carry three different loads for one farm or multiple different farms, allowing efficiency and flexibility to suit the farmer’s needs. Te Awamutu Bulk Spreaders has continued evolving the equipment to suit modern dairy systems. Derek handles most of the maintenance in the workshop as well as driving a truck himself in the busy times, supporting a growing team. The business offers a full range of spreading services for dairy farms and dry stock blocks from fertiliser and compost application to clearing effluent ponds. A digger handles pond solids, while a versatile truck known as Lofty carries three different bins for fertiliser, compost, and specialised materials. Their depot also has the facilities to store lime and various fertilisers in bulk or bagged options, allowing them to operate efficiently and effectively to cater to their farmers’ needs. This is especially helpful for farmers wanting lime on before their crops go in, as it can be done when it suits. After decades of development, Te Awamutu Bulk Spreading continues to focus on one thing: understanding farmers’ needs and delivering solutions that protect soil, pasture, and productivity. “Farming keeps the world turning,” Karen says. “Our job is to support the people who feed the world.” Owners Karen and Derek Furniss have been in the industry of fertiliser spreading for more than 30 years, taking over from Derek’s parents Leonee and Gordon Furniss who started the business over 40 years ago.
