Owner of Fabish & Jackson Steve Fabish says the client had originally been thinking about extending the farm’s existing shed but an assessment found the ageing building was too far gone for that to be a worthwhile investment. The orientation of the old shed was also creating ongoing problems with cows having to walk downhill into it. Steve says the issues had been tolerated for years but the project provided an opportunity to address them properly. “Rather than spending money extending an old shed it was going to save the client money in the long run to build a new one and we were able to advise them on the best direction to take,” says Steve. Fabish & Jackson has worked closely with the client to develop a design focused on efficient cow flow, ease of use and ensuring value for money. The company worked through various options with the client before settling on the new shed on a fresh site. Cow flow was a key consideration, with the design needing to connect seamlessly with the farm’s existing races and also create a user-friendly working environment. A new yard was required as part of the redevelopment and the site itself needed to be built up to ensure the correct flow into the effluent ponds. Fabish & Jackson is managing the project from start to finish, including the earthworks, with subcontractors brought in where required. It has also taken care of the necessary consents, providing the client with a complete turnkey solution. The four-month project is due to be completed later this year with the client aiming to be milking in the new shed before Christmas. Steve says the project is a good example of the scope of work Fabish & Jackson can undertake. “It demonstrates we can do any job, nothing is too difficult. It will also make a big difference to this client and they’ll be able to milk their herd much more efficiently,” says Steve. The Rahotu project is one of several jobs currently keeping the company busy with a house reclad also underway.
