Dianna Malcolm RURAL SERVICES » Canterbury Water Services A rock-solid reputation keeps Canterbury Water Services (CWS) in high demand in the North Canterbury region. Initiated by James and Abby Barnett in 2014 off the back of James’ farming experience and love of agriculture, CWS today employs five staff and has five service and installation vehicles on the road. With workshops in Woodend and Culverden, it knows time is money for its customers when it comes to fresh water solutions on-farm. To that end, it has settled its core focus on North Canterbury and (in particular) the Hurunui catchment where its response times and local knowledge put it in a league of its own. Solid set irrigators are a solid success CWS is recognised for designing the popular automated solid set sprinkler, which offers water, power and labour savings. It uses the QTech Data Systems’ wireless irrigation post controller, which is managed remotely by radio and is completely autonomous. Initially they were the perfect foil to water the corners of paddocks centre pivots missed. However, increasingly they are being used on hill blocks and in smaller areas where farmers don’t want to clear trees away, buy a centre pivot, or spend the day tied to shifting irrigators. The QTech Data System controls the valve at each sprinkler point, and includes a timer set to a schedule that makes the most of the supply of water and soil conditions. The posts are also tall enough that cattle can safely graze around them. James is gratified that its growing uptake continues to win friends based on its well-rehearsed units that are made with quality parts from well-known brands. “As water gets harder to get, everyone has to be more careful,” Abby said. “Rather than flood irrigation or just putting water where you want it, these solid set irrigators literally disperse the right amount of water to grow pasture or crops on a one or a two-day cycle.”In addition to solid set irrigation, CWS installs, services, and maintains all aspects of farm water, including household irrigation, drip lines, stock water, mainline, pump, and tank installations for stock and household water, new and upgrading dairy shed water, and effluent pumping systems and disbursement around farms. It also supplies high quality parts and services for all farm water needs.
