Managing director, Damien Taylor, says the move is a deliberate long-term investment in the region, driven by both client demand and a commitment to supporting local communities. “We’re aiming to build our presence and be there long term,” he says. Central to that approach is a strong focus on local employment and procurement. Damien says the company has prioritised building a regional team and engaging local trades wherever possible. “All our project managers and site managers we employ direct are locals,” he says “We have a local procurement policy within our business, with targets of over 65% of trades on-site to be from the local region. We want to keep the local economy going as well with every project we undertake.” The first project, located at 568 Main Street, began on-site in February and involves the construction of 14, one-bedroom terrace homes for a developer for social housing. The development features a mix of multi-unit buildings and a standalone home, all designed in a compact, efficient typology. “This is a typology we haven’t built before, with kitchen and living downstairs and bedroom and bathroom upstairs,” says Damien. Despite its relatively modest scale, the project presents logistical challenges, due to its location on a busy main road and the limited space available on-site. “There are only six car parks on-site, so once we have site offices and a manager there, there’s not much room left for trades. It really comes down to careful scheduling and planning.” The development is due for completion in September this year. The second project in Palmerston North further reinforces the company’s focus on community housing. This development comprises 26 units across three, three-storey apartment buildings, offering a mix of one- and two-bedroom homes for an iwi community housing provider. “It’s another important project for us in the region – working with a different client, but still focused on delivering quality housing for the community,” says Damien.
