Nearly a decade since launching in Palmerston North, Tyla Mepham Construction has developed into a steady residential and light-commercial builder known for hands-on delivery and strong relationships, with a growing footprint across the lower North Island. Founded in 2017 by Tyla Mepham, the business has navigated a volatile few years in construction, shaped by Covid disruptions and wider economic uncertainty, while maintaining consistent workloads across its core regions. “We have definitely had some testing years,” Tyla says. “Even with that, Palmerston North has stayed fairly steady and we have managed to keep busy.” The company operates across Palmerston North and down to Levin, with recent growth in commercial fit-outs, after developing relationships with Subway franchise owners across the lower North Island. “We actually got into that work by eating Subway and building relationships with the owners,” Tyla says. “One thing led to another and we’ve ended up doing fit-outs for them.” Alongside commercial work, Tyla Mepham Construction is completing a major renovation on a character home on one of Palmerston North’s heritage streets. The early 1900s’ two-storey property is being carefully restored and strengthened, while retaining its original heritage features. “There are steel portals going in, and we are restoring the old rimu timber flooring while keeping that heritage look,” Tyla says. “The owners are a family relocating from Dunedin, so they are managing the project remotely while preparing to make it their home.” The project has presented typical challenges of working with older homes, including removing concrete hidden beneath timber flooring by hand when machinery access was not possible. “It is all part of working on older homes,” Tyla says. “You uncover things along the way and have to figure out the best solution.” Tyla’s experience spans residential builds and large commercial projects, including multi-storey work in Christchurch during the post-earthquake rebuild. One standout project was the Trimble building, working alongside his stepfather and mentor. “I started out sweeping floors for my stepdad’s company when I was still at school,” Tyla says. “Eventually, I realised building was what I wanted to do.” After completing his apprenticeship during the Christchurch rebuild, he returned to Palmerston North and launched his own company in his early 20s. Today, the company employs a team of five and is continuing to grow carefully, with Tyla focused on finding staff that share the company’s values and work ethic. “It is hard to find qualified builders at the moment,” he says. “We are pretty selective about who we bring on because culture is important to us.” The company is supporting younger tradespeople through work experience opportunities with Palmerston North Boys’ High School, helping introduce students to the industry and potential apprenticeship pathways. Tyla says maintaining a positive workplace remains central to the business. “I’ve built good relationships by having a smile on my face every day,” he says. “That can make a big difference to a lot of people, and we want to be known as the happy company that people want to work with.”
