SJL Construction is continuing to deliver practical, high quality building work across Dannevirke, with owner Samuel Last combining hands on capability with a flexible approach that is resonating with local clients. Now working largely on his own, Sam says the business has evolved into a streamlined operation that allows him to stay close to every project while still taking on substantial builds. “I am by myself at the moment, which actually works well,” Sam says. “I can manage most jobs, including larger projects, and when I need extra support, I bring in trusted contractors I have worked with before. It keeps things efficient and the quality stays high.” That model is currently being applied to a recladding project, where SJL Construction is replacing older cement weatherboards with a modern concrete sheet system installed vertically for a clean, architectural finish. “It is a really nice product, and the job has gone smoothly,” Sam says. “Even with some constraints around keeping existing windows in place, the result is coming together well.” While smaller scale work remains steady, SJL Construction has also proven its capability on more complex builds. One of its standout projects over the past year was a 250sqm extension to an existing home, transforming the property into a modern, highly functional living space. The project included a new master bedroom, ensuite, double internal garage, and expanded living areas, along with a large kitchen, scullery, and outdoor entertaining space complete with a gable roof overlooking a pool. “It was a big job that took most of the year,” Sam says. “We had a couple of extra guys on site at that stage, and it really showed what we can deliver when everything comes together.” That depth of experience is supported by earlier architectural work, including a detailed coastal holiday home build that required precision finishes, careful material selection, and coordination in a remote location. Projects like that have helped build SJL Construction’s reputation for taking on technically demanding work and delivering it to a high standard. Despite a solid pipeline of work for the next few months, Sam says the wider market remains mixed, particularly in rural areas where spending priorities can shift quickly. “There is a lot of farming around here, and while farmers are doing well, a lot of money is going back into fertiliser or paying down debt,” he says. “That can slow building decisions in the short term.” Against that backdrop, Sam believes there is a strong case for clients to move ahead sooner rather than later. “Property prices have levelled out and there is less pressure in the market,” he says. “It is actually a good time to build because you can take the time to plan properly and get the job done without the same level of competition we saw a few years ago.” With a focus on workmanship, adaptability, and trusted relationships, SJL Construction is well positioned to support that next wave of building activity.
