Twelve years later he set up his own building company SJP Builders in Whanganui after five years working for a large construction company in Taupo. “As a 19/20-year-old I always had targets and goals, so I’d set a goal to be qualified by the time I was 21 and hit that, and I had the goal to start a business and work for myself which I hit when I was 27,” says Scott. “By then I had my own tools and my own vehicle, no debt, so I was ready, but what gave me the final push was having a drink with a friend of mine, Alex Sigley. He’s a property developer and had a lot of work coming up. The timing was right and within a few hours I had an accountant and a company name and was ready to start my first new house build back in Whanganui.” Ten years later SJP Builders is a team of six including Scott and two apprentices. Everyone working there did their apprenticeship with him, and two have been with him for nearly the full 10 years. “Everyone I’ve hired has come through the BCITO (Building and Construction Industry Whether clients arrive with completed architectural drawings, or begin with an early concept, Kieran can provide guidance through the design stage to ensure the plans are practical, aligned with budget expectations, and ready for construction. “Building a home is a big investment, and it should be an enjoyable process, not a stressful one,” he says. K B Gleeson’s craftsmanship, attention to detail, and ability to deliver an outstanding result have brought multiple accolades in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards. In 2020, the company achieved Top 100 and Gold awards, along with Regional Category and Regional Lifestyle Sustainable honours for a timeless weatherboard villa-style country home in Greytown in the $1 million-$1.5 million category. A Regional Bronze award followed in 2021. “It’s not just a one-off; it’s about consistency,” says Kieran. The team applies the same passion and craftsmanship to renovations and extensions, from interior transformations to substantial additions. “We do extensions that blend perfectly with your existing space, whether it’s an extra bedroom or open-plan living area.” Training Organisation) apprenticeship scheme. I’m very precise in carpentry and in the level of skill it takes to be a good builder, so I’m big on training and want to pass on my knowledge,” says Scott. SJP Builders has plenty of repeat customers along with new ones coming through wordof-mouth and they are ready to take on a new project however big or small. “From high-end houses to brick and tile, alterations, kitchens and bathrooms, decks, fencing, you name it we’ll do it. We’ve undertaken a wide range of stuff over the years.” Regardless of the scale of the project, SJP Builders approach it with the same attitude and almost entirely the same group of contractors that Scott has worked with since he began 10 years ago. He knows he can rely on them and on every member of his team to produce the top-quality work his company is known for as well as the sheer volume of work they get through. “We’re a tight group and we’ll do extra hours if we need to and keep the same quality workmanship. The standard of our work is second to none and that’s something we’re always proud about,” says Scott. Scott works extensively with architect Dave Coker from DC Design including a high-end build currently underway in Wainui Beach - an intricate two-storey build with an elevator and extensive sea views. SJP Builders takes on any project - big or small.
