T T to page 16 A new $70m veterinary research and teaching facility, which opened at Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University’s Manawatū campus last November, caps off a 15-year, $160m investment to upgrade veterinary facilities at the university. Called Ngā Huia, this new facility further strengthens Tāwharau Ora School of Veterinary Science in its pivotal role as the sole provider of veterinary education in New Zealand. It includes state of the art laboratories for specialist research, academic and post- graduate offices, as well as a dedicated student hub. In March, Veterinary Science at Massey jumped five places in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Subject Rankings to be ranked 14th in the world and first in Oceania and Asia. It is also ranked first in the world on employer reputation, a measure of how highly employers regard Massey’s Veterinary Science graduates. “Ngā Huia and the other buildings we have upgraded in recent years are just part of the school reinventing itself ready for the next 50 years as the nation’s sole provider of vet education,” says Professor Jon Huxley, Head of Tāwharau School of Veterinary Science, Massey University. “Our ranking has been improving for a number of years now and that is also due to the contributions from staff, students and alumni and the world class veterinary education programme we deliver at Massey.” Fully funded by Massey, the veterinary facilities upgrade programme has also included Massey’s equine hospital, new Wildbase facilities (native wildlife hospital), veterinary clinic spaces and a student learning complex. The opening of Ngā Huia last year, on time and within budget, marks the conclusion of a period of significant investment and change at the School of Veterinary Science. Construction started on site in August 2023 and generated more than 237,000 hours of labour. The results are both impressive and impactful. Ngā Huia’s laboratory facilities are supporting advanced research in areas such as animal welfare science and bioethics, production, working, and native animal health, as well as pathobiology and infectious diseases. In turn, this strengthens the school’s ability to lead and support efforts to combat disease outbreaks and pandemics, and care for animals in Aotearoa New Zealand. The school gave assistance in the COVID-19 response and regularly provides expert advice to the New Zealand government and global bodies like the World Health Organisation.
