| 15 Massey University: Ngā Huia - Tāwharau Ora School of Veterinary Science Based in Palmerston North, Kendrick Joinery & Design is a specialist supplier of high-end commercial and residential solid timber and custom joinery to the Manawatū-Whanganui region and south to Wellington. Kendrick Joinery & Design is equipped to deliver bespoke joinery solutions at scale, as demonstrated by their work for a new $70m veterinary research and teaching facility at Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University’s Manawatū campus, which opened last November. Called Ngā Huia, this exciting new facility includes specialist research labs, academic o ices and a dedicated student hub. “This is the irst project of this size and calibre we have done for Massey University,” says Kendrick Joinery’s owner Livvy Kendrick, who bought the business, formerly Townsend Joinery, in 2024. “It is a massive achievement for us. It took a huge team e ort to complete this job to the standard required for client and architect and get it done right.” Ngā Huia’s architectural design required a joinery team with high-level skills and capabilities to make and install a detailed range of custom joinery features, including a large, bespoke timber staircase connecting the ground loor student hub with upper level research labs and o ices. “That staircase was intricately detailed and had to be executed accurately. We put a lot of planning into that, including careful measuring and templating ahead of manufacture. We also made and transported the building’s feature ceiling panels and assisted with the process of suspending them from the ceiling.” These panels are six-metres long by four-metres wide. Dubbed ceiling feathers, four were required downstairs along with some hexagonal panels upstairs. Recycled rimu materials were used in these features, which tie into the building’s cultural narrative and sustainability ethos. Livvy brings a strong background in construction, kitchen design and joinery to Kendrick Joinery & Design, leading the 12-strong team out of a 1,000sqm joinery factory. “We design, manufacture and install the full range for interior itouts, kitchens, and bespoke joinery for specialist projects such as libraries. When it comes to bespoke joinery, we do it all.” This year, Kendrick Joinery & design is working on several other large and detailed projects in Palmerston North. “We did the Ngā Huia project for McMillan & Lockwood, the main contractor for the build. We also have more projects in the pipeline with their team and are looking forward to working with them again.” Bespoke joinery solutions, expertly executed Our skillfully crafted cabinets are a perfect blend of functionality, elegance, and innovation, designed to transform your culinary space into a masterpiece.
