REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Vet school set for future Most of the ground floor is a dedicated space for the Veterinary School’s undergraduate students. T T from page 14 “Ngā Huia and the other buildings we have upgraded in recent years are just part of the school reinventing itself ready for the next 50 years.” The building’s design reflects a partnership between the university and local iwi Rangitāne through Tohunga Whakairo, Warren Warbrick, who developed a cultural narrative. The name ‘Nga Huia’ symbolises that partnership and the way in which huia birds relied on each other for food and survival. References to the huia can be seen throughout the building’s exterior and interior design. “Alongside the operations and functionality of Ngā Huia, staff and students have spoken very highly of its look and feel. “Having worked with Rangitāne as mana whenua to embed a cultural narrative throughout, we’ve managed to deliver a place that is fully embedded in the history and culture of Aotearoa New Zealand.” Features in the building include a ngutu kākā pattern reminiscent of the Tararua ranges and the huia wattle; a tāniko pattern in façade and doorway glazing; an exterior pou by James Molnar (Rangitāne ki Manawatū) at the front entry that depicts flocks of huia; an exposed timber ceiling inspired by huia feathers; entrance mosaic tiling that represents male and female huia; and a striking mural by Reweti Arapere (Raukawa, Tūwharetoa, Porourangi). Most of the ground floor is a dedicated space for the Veterinary School’s 700 undergraduate students. It includes a dedicated locker area for storing overalls, boots and other outdoor equipment for use on Massey’s farms; a large entrance area with seating; kitchen spaces; and meeting rooms that students can book for group study. “It has been great working with the Massey Veterinary Student Association to embed new events and culture in the building, which will become the traditions of the future. Just this morning [4 May] the students hosted representatives from the New Zealand Veterinary Association at Ngā Huia to hear about different roles within the profession and industry. We’re also working together to create a gallery of all the veterinary year groups since the first intake in 1968. It’s a large, fit-for-purpose space and it’s great to see them making it their own.” Massey University: Ngā Huia - Tāwharau Ora School of Veterinary Science ELECTRICAL • INDUSTRIAL • AUTOMATION COMMERCIAL • Fire and security alarms • Commercial electrical • Residential electrical • HVAC electrical • Industrial electrical • Airfield lighting • Traffic signals • Automation • Street lighting Project Manager Jonathan Hogg 06 350 1000 | enquiries@maxtarr.co.nz | www.maxtarr.co.nz Manager Dean Berendt 06 350 1006 | enquiries@maxtarr.co.nz | www.maxtarr.co.nz INDUSTRIAL SUREFLOORS is gratified to have installed the high-performance Sureshield Flooring System in the newMassey University Vet Science 3 Nga Huia Build.
