For patients in Wellington’s eastern suburbs, the new Peninsula Medical Centre in Miramar will mean more than just a change of address – it will represent a major investment in the future of community healthcare, driven by doctors with a genuine stake in the wellbeing of the area they serve. The project has been led by Medispace, a specialist healthcare construction and development company, which has spent 15 years helping medical professionals create purpose-built facilities designed around both patient care and long-term practice success. Founded in 2010, Medispace was born from a simple conversation with a doctor, who was unsure whether to extend an existing practice, relocate, or build new. At the time, there was little specialist advice available for healthcare providers navigating those decisions. Since then, the company has developed more than 200 healthcare projects, assisting over 900 medical professionals and supporting facilities used by an estimated one million patients. When it comes to its latest project with Peninsula Medical Centre, Medispace helped turn what could have been a setback for the 28-year-old practice into an opportunity. After learning that its lease would not be renewed, Peninsula Health, the largest GP practice in the area, set about finding new premises to call home. The practice accepted Medispace’s offer of help and together, the teams identified and purchased a new site that would not only allow Peninsula Medical Centre to continue operating in the community, but also give it room to grow well into the future. The new facility is significantly larger, and has been designed with future growth in mind. Alongside the GP clinic, Green Cross Pharmacy will also relocate into the new development, creating a more integrated healthcare experience for patients. The refurbishment of the older, vacant building includes a new roof, replacement windows, and structural strengthening to bring the building fully up to code. “They’ve gone the full nine yards,” Matt says. “It was a great opportunity to brighten the building up.” But the vision doesn’t stop there. Dr Ken Looi, a managing director of Peninsula Medical Centre, along with his business partner, have also purchased the neighbouring vacant unit with plans to transform it into additional medical facilities that could eventually house services such as radiology, dental care, or other specialist health providers. “The GP is the heart of the medical centre,” Matt says. “What we’ve seen in the past is that when the GP is established, more medical businesses will move in around them. It is going to be great for the community.” Importantly, the development remains closely tied to the healthcare professionals themselves, with the project owned by the core doctors behind Peninsula Health – ensuring the people making decisions are deeply invested in the long-term success of the practice and the community it serves. The new Peninsula Medical Centre and Green Cross Pharmacy premises are on track to open on July 1, with the process having gone “very smoothly”. For Miramar residents, the result will be a modern, expanded healthcare hub designed to support the community for decades to come.
