T T Anne Boswell From major bridge works to commercial developments and hard-toreach residential pours, Quality Pumping has built its reputation on speed, efficiency and communication. Established in 2017 by Mickayla and Chris Vandermeer, the business has grown steadily across Hawke’s Bay and beyond, taking on an increasing number of large-scale infrastructure and commercial projects while maintaining a hands-on approach to customer service. At the heart of the Quality Pumping operation is advanced concrete-pumping technology. It uses boom pumps and ground line systems, able to pump up to 200 metres of ground line. With the ability to pump concrete into difficult access areas and at extremely fast pumping rates, Quality Pumping is helping to significantly reduce the labour time spent on-site, while increasing the quality of the work. “Carting two hundred barrows of concrete by hand can take three to four hours, whereas I can empty a full truckload in three minutes using our machinery,” Chris says. “There’s no question that it is more efficient. It reduces labour costs and helps projects meet their deadlines.” While the business works across all sectors, commercial and civil construction have become key specialties. Following severe weather events and flooding impacts across Hawke’s Bay, bridge rebuilds and repairs have become a major part of the workload. Quality Pumping has worked on several high-profile projects, including the Kereru Bridge, Rissington Bridge, and Dartmoor Bridge developments. The company has also contributed to a range of notable commercial and infrastructure jobs, including work at the Flaxmere Woolworths and the NZ Post building. Another standout project was the Napier-Taupō Road wind farm development, where Quality Pumping worked on the wind turbine foundations. Mickayla says the project marked a significant achievement for the business, highlighting the company’s ability to handle large-scale, technically demanding work. Although Hawke’s Bay remains Quality Pumping’s home base, the company frequently travels for projects, with regular work in Gisborne and other regions. One of its earlier milestone projects was the Taupo lakefront sidewalk development in 2019, where the team completed extensive line pumping work over the course of a year. Today, the business consists of Mickayla and Chris alongside three operators: a close-knit team focused on reliability and professionalism. “Quality is our top priority,” Mickayla says. “Communication is also huge for us – whether it’s between staff, with clients, or making sure any issues on-site are dealt with quickly.” That emphasis on communication and efficiency has helped the company establish long-term relationships with contractors and clients across the region. Looking ahead, Quality Pumping is continuing to invest in its fleet and capabilities. “We try to keep our fleet up to date,” Chris says. “We have a brand-new machine due to arrive in August.” For Quality Pumping, the goal is to continue to deliver high-quality concrete pumping solutions that help projects run faster and more efficiently.
