T T Sue Russell David de Freitas splits his time between New Zealand and Australia, running a construction business across the Tasman with his nephew, Simon Hvalica, and in September 2025, the pair also took ownership of Kalós Windows & Doors in Palmerston North. The back-and-forth travel is something David takes in his stride as he nurtures this new enterprise. Acquiring the company just made good sense from a logistical point of view, he says. “We were looking for something that would support our existing business in Australia and were looking at Western Australia, but that’s a very long way away from where we operate in southern New South Wales, so when the opportunity presented to purchase Kalós Windows & Doors here, we considered it carefully,” says David. He says when they examined the company’s operation in New Zealand, it presented opportunities to grow and add value. “Building on from what existed is what drives us. We want to double sales, and we have taken real steps to create an environment where that can occur. “We saw at the beginning the estimator interactions with our customers was minimal. We now interact right from first contact to understand their budget and what the customer really needs, especially in the retrofit space.” At Kalós Windows & Doors, an online estimating system has been developed and launched on their website, providing customers with a user-friendly tool to get an estimate. It is quick and simple to use. An in-depth online QA system has been introduced across the factories to support the company’s growth and ensure a more efficient quality-assurance process. Proof of work is photographed at key stages, with every inspection, image and approval time-stamped and stored in one central location. The system provides customers with both confidence and clear evidence of the work completed. These business developments have created a strong framework from which further growth can be managed with confidence and capability. Now, David says, attention has turned to the manufacturing site, the floor layout and flow in the manufacturing process. “We are modelling ideas to make the plant and people operate more efficiently.” Kalós Windows & Doors operates three manufacturing sites: two purpose-built factories in Palmerston North servicing the residential and commercial sectors, and a residential manufacturing facility in Levin. The Quadra machine is a fully automated system capable of cutting, milling, drilling and notching aluminium profiles with exceptional speed and accuracy. Its precision and efficiency have significantly enhanced the fabrication process, enabling Kalós to deliver high-quality results consistently. “We feel we have tapped into what was already there at Kalós, positioning the company for a strong future and continued growth,” says David. “Six months on, the initial focus on retaining customers proved to be exactly where the energy needed to be, and the business is now focused on building capacity, expanding its service offering, and raining its profile across New Zealand.”
