The two have always got on, even as kids, so going into business together made sense – Matt leading construction and technical delivery, and Jess partnering with clients on design decisions and selections, while managing the commercial side of the business. “Because we know each other so well, communication is direct and efficient. Decisions can be made quickly, and nothing gets lost in translation, which ultimately creates a smoother experience for our clients,” says Jess. Having grown up in Cambridge, they remain closely connected to the community through family, work, and local activities. They have developed the business to specifically target architectural builds and specialised renovations, and their point of difference lies in the execution of high-end architectural precision and a local-first, family-run approach. “We have a shared vision and, while many companies focus on volume, we specialise in the complexity of architectural new builds and large-scale, high-end renovations,” Jess says. “We operate with a small, elite team, including a dedicated site manager and experienced builders alongside trusted local subcontractors. This allows us to maintain a high level of craftsmanship, communication, and consistency across every stage of the build.” Matt has over 20 years’ building experience and on-site leadership, and Jess joined the business about a year after he started Finz Carpentry, bringing a decade of procurement expertise and a strong head for numbers. One project they are particularly proud of is the renovation of a character home, bringing about a contemporary and functional transformation, with the home now exuding more warmth and charm. “Internally, the kitchen, scullery, and living spaces have been reconfigured to improve flow, natural light, and connection between zones. The design balances openness with purpose, creating spaces that feel both practical and considered,” says Jess. A key driver throughout the project was retaining the home’s original character – particularly the existing rimu detailing. Original rimu staircase stringers have been transformed into custom shelving in the kitchen and lounge, and also staircase capping. “These details create a meaningful connection between the home’s past and present, adding warmth and authenticity throughout.” From a design perspective, the home leans toward a modern farmhouse aesthetic – combining Natural materials with more refined, contemporary detailing. Externally, charred Accoya cladding and Stria board create depth and contrast. Subtle industrial touches, such as corrugated finishes, add another layer of interest, while still feeling appropriate to the rural setting. The outdoor living area has been a major focal point of the renovation, with its hardwood decking extending from the main living spaces down into a refurbished swimming pool. This space is anchored by a matching custom outdoor fireplace, serving as both a visual centrepiece and gathering point. The clients had a strong connection to their home, but wanted it to better suit their lifestyle. “The end result is a home that feels both familiar and completely refreshed – a balance of character, performance, and modern living. We’re really pleased with how it’s come together,” says Jess.
