Founded in 2020 by qualified builder Matt “Morry” Morison, the company has steadily built a reputation for quality workmanship, honest communication and going the extra mile for its clients. “I’ve been fortunate to build a great team around me,” says Morry. “Our experienced foreman Gareth plays a huge role on site, Mel looks after our administration and health and safety while also lending a hand on site when needed, and Jack is doing a fantastic job progressing through the final stages of his apprenticeship.” Before establishing Morison Building, Morry spent his early career with a respected local building company, gaining experience across residential homes, commercial projects and Ministry of Education work. “Those years were invaluable for developing my skills. I was given responsibility early, running jobs as an apprentice, and I learned a huge amount. I was interested in moving into a managerial-type role, but when that opportunity wasn’t available, starting my own business became the natural next step.” Today, Morison Building works on projects throughout Hawke’s Bay and Tararua, generally within an hour of Waipukurau, with the majority of work remaining local. “In a small community you become known for being reliable and versatile,” Morry says. “We’ve earned a reputation as the team people call for almost anything. One week we’re building a high-end custom home, the next we’re completing a roof replacement, concrete work or fixing a door. We genuinely enjoy the variety.” The company provides complete building solutions, from project management through to construction, making the building process as straightforward as possible for clients. One area Morry is particularly passionate about is developing the next generation of builders. Apprentice Jack joined the business through the Gateway programme and is now in his final year of training. “The apprenticeship system has come a long way. Everything is more organised and online, and the support from BCITO assessors is excellent. It’s a real partnership between the apprentice, the assessor and the employer.” High-quality new homes and renovations Having first experienced the Gateway programme himself while at school, Morry remains a strong advocate for introducing young people to the building industry. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to experience real building sites before deciding if it’s the career for them. That’s exactly how I got started.” Morison Building also believes in supporting the local community, including programmes that support youth to stay on track and promote road safety education. Recent projects have ranged from large residential additions to commercial construction. “A standout project for us was a substantial home extension that included a new garage. The clients were fantastic to work with, and projects like that remind you why relationships are such an important part of building.” With multiple projects often underway simultaneously, the team continues to balance larger commercial contracts alongside smaller residential work, ensuring every client receives the same level of professionalism and care. Outside the tools, Morry is committed to continually improving the business through industry training, networking and learning from other builders. “I enjoy learning and finding better ways to run the business.
