| 107 Beck Building BUILDING Beck Building have never been awarded less than gold. Beck Building have never been awarded less than gold, putting them in the top quadrant around the country every time. This year was no exception with their entry into the Open, or $4Million and Over, category in the Bay of Plenty and Central Plateau Region of the architectural home known as Hikari House that they built overlooking Lake Taupō. “This year was awesome because it follows up what we got last year which was seven awards plus another two top 100’s so we had nine awards in total last year. This year we’ve got five plus top 100 so that’s six and hoping for more at the Nationals,” Jamie says. The Top 100 represent the highest-scoring homes in the country from the regional stage of the HOTY Awards, selected purely by the points they’re awarded regardless of their category or location. These 100 houses automatically become the national finalists and Hikari House is one of them. “The house itself, as the judges said, had the maximum complexity you could ask for in a build with all the different products and design and low tolerances but also the site was very challenging,” says Jamie. The garage gives a good illustration. They excavated eight metres down into the slope to build a garage that is tucked into the bank with a landscaped green roof on top of the concrete and steel structure with its big glass sliders. It’s not just a garage but a showroom that can house three of the client’s classic cars at any given time. In addition to receiving a Gold Award in the ‘$4Million and Over’ category, Hikari House won four specific awards which they hope to repeat at national level : a Special Award for exceptional architectural vision, recognising the home’s beautiful Japanese inspired integration into the challenging site; The Lifestyle Award for Kitchen honouring the way design excellence meets functionality to meet the specific needs of the homeowners; The Lifestyle Award for Bathroom which also recognised that the outstanding bathroom was tailored perfectly to the owners, and the Lifestyle Award for Interior Design which celebrated the exceptional, cohesive interior styling and execution through the house. At National level later in the year Hikari House will once again be up against other houses in the open category, built with considerably bigger budgets, but given the cohesive vision of its architecture, landscaping and interior, and the design ingenuity that produced such a well-executed build on a difficult site, the qualities that won it a Regional Special Award might give it a winning edge regardless of how much money has been spent. • EARTHWORKS • DEMOLITION • LANDSCAPING • HEAVY MACHINERY Comprehensive Earth Moving Solutions in Taupo and surrounding districts.
