Many of the homes we’re building are frontrunners in every respect – they’re functional, energy-efficient, healthy homes that are also architecturally stunning and beautifully positioned in their environment.” BUILDING Matai Homes T T Kim Newth Matai Homes bring a lens of precision to all aspects of high performance construction. Matai Homes Limited has a strong track record across Wellington and Kapiti for delivering industry-leading, high-performance and passive house projects. Directors Chay Goodwin and Erwin Kronawitter are both certified Passive House tradesmen, who share the goals of the Passive House Institute of NZ (PHINZ) around improving energy efficiency of homes and lifting health and well-being by closing the gap between the desired and actual performance of buildings. Their deep understanding of this aspirational approach is all about building better and raising the bar on energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality in New Zealand. It is an advanced way of building, underpinned by science and centred on quality of life. A strong focus on airtightness, high-performance insulation, and mechanical ventilation are the key building blocks for comfortable, draft-free living year-round. “With today’s high power prices, we’re seeing more people waking up to the advantages of living in a healthier home that’s warmer, drier and costs way less to heat or cool compared to a conventionally built home,” says Chay. Matai Homes bring a lens of precision to all aspects of high performance construction, from framing to finishing, and is meticulous about maintaining high standards of quality, safety and workmanship. Their growing team works closely with trusted partners, project managers, designers and subcontractors. “At Matai Homes, we’re passionate about quality craftmanship and playing our part in building a healthier, more energy efficient future for people. We take pride in ensuring that every detail is delivered with excellence. We have a very experienced team of carpenters, all highly skilled, and we actively support their ongoing development by providing regular training in Passive House and advanced building techniques. Directors Chay and Erwin bring complementary strengths to their business. Chay’s apprenticeship in the UK was with high-performance, low-energy home builders. He returned to New Zealand with his young family in 2007 and then in 2010 founded a construction company serving the residential market in Kapiti and Wellington. By 2017, his growing focus on high-performance homes saw him partner with Erwin to establish Matai Homes Ltd. Erwin, Matai Homes’ project manager, Building healthier, energy-efficient homes began his career as a young apprentice before studying engineering and project management. In Germany, he worked on sustainable and passive house projects. After moving to New Zealand in 2005, he managed multi-million-dollar commercial builds before pivoting to high-performance housing in 2017. He and Chay are both committed to building better homes for New Zealand. Not everyone will want to go all the way on building a fully Passive House. As Chay observes, their goal at Matai Homes is to add value for people, no matter where they are on that energy efficiency and better building pathway. Project success for them is being able to deliver a healthier, better quality home that is easier and cheaper to live in. “We get so much positive feedback from our clients. Many of the homes we’re building are frontrunners in every respect – they’re functional, energy-efficient, healthy homes that are also architecturally stunning and beautifully positioned in their environment.” Matai Homes is small-scale in its industry with an outsized impact in its region and a growing team focussed on a better future for people and planet.
