Cowley Construction are specialist high-end residential and commercial builders delivering bespoke homes, renovations and luxury new builds with quality craftsmanship. The team have been working on the iconic Wellington Fishmarket on Cuba St, owner Mitch Cowley said. “We have replaced the shop front canopy, which took eight weeks to complete. The shop below needed to remain operational and the footpath had to stay open, we designed and built a scaffold system to suit.” “Normally, a project like this would require the footpath and shop to be closed, so working around a live retail environment presented some unique challenges. It was a great project for the team and one that required a lot of planning and coordination to keep everyone safe while maintaining access for the public and the business.” Mitch, 29, started Cowley Construction in 2022, having been building for five years before that. It is very much a family business. “I come from a long line of builders. Our grandad Barry Foss was a builder and used to have his own company, I grew up in the industry. I spent a lot of time in his workshop and would travel to jobs with them and help out during the school holidays as a young apprentice.” “My uncle and three cousins are also all quality carpenters, some who now work with us. So building has always been a big part of our family and it’s something I’ve been passionate about from a young age.” Two mentors/builders Mitchell worked alongside, who he truly appreciates are Rhys Finlay and Cameron Edmonds. The Cowley team enjoy the challenges of architectural builds. “We’re a tight-knit team and we really enjoy the challenges that come with architectural and bespoke projects. “Architectural building requires more problem-solving and attention to detail. There’s often no straightforward solution, so it gives the guys an opportunity to really apply their skills, think outside the box and take pride in the finished result.” A passionate, family building business They also really enjoy incorporating modern technology and innovative building solutions into the homes they build. “Our role is to deliver the structure and building envelope to the architect’s design, while working closely with specialist trades who install the technology and systems. Good communication and collaboration between all the trades is what ultimately delivers a great result for the client.” Recently the company was tasked with building a replica cottage in Melrose. “It was a 35-square-metre, self-contained dwelling. The site was steep and muddy so the biggest challenge was getting the structure safely out of the ground. A lot of time and care went into the piling and foundations before we could start bringing the house to life. “It was a challenging project, but that’s exactly the type of work we enjoy. Finding practical solutions and turning a difficult site into a quality finished home is very rewarding.” Giving back to the community is important and they have organised a school giveaway.
