| 31 T T Sue Russell Shed Central team cater to all needs Shed Central designs and constructs sheds of all shapes and sizes for clients. Trudi and Andrew McHale own and operate Taupo-based Shed Central Ltd, a company that designs and constructs insitu, sheds of all shapes and sizes for clients, many of whom have availed themselves of the business’s services on more than one occasion. When Business Central last spoke with Trudi 18 months or so ago, the couple was underway with a purpose-built lockable facility at Manuka Street, involving construction of 43 individually titled storage units, with 12 sold at that time. Those units, ranged in size from 40 – 97sqm, offering would-be purchasers plenty of options. Of the 43 units, 37 were being built inside a gated compound with the balance outside. “The shed building side to our business is going well. It’s one of a few arms to our wider company’s activity, including currently working on a subdivision. We’ve just completed a large-scale shed in Rakaunui Road,” Trudi says. Like anywhere in New Zealand, she stresses, the town is frequented at times by what she calls ‘cowboys’ in the shed building industry. Trudi’s experience is that these people tend to stay a while then move on. “We’re fortunate to have been in the business of building strong bespoke sheds for so many years now that we have customers who understand the quality of our work and just keep coming back, which is very gratifying and something we’re extremely proud of.” Asked how they engage with clients at the first conversation, Trudi says they ask them to describe the size of the largest thing they want to house inside the shed. This information, she explains, dictates the size of the roller-door and the design of the shed from there. “We also ask our customers about the land they’re building on, what is the situation regarding Council consenting requirements and recommend they approach Council early on to ascertain what is legally required.” Having build for Council in the past, places Shed Central Ltd in a good position to understand how best to engage with them, with the view of ensuring that customers traverse the regulations regarding constructing sheds on their land without any unforeseen challenges. When a Resource Consent is needed, Trudi and Andrew advise who best to see, in order to progress this well. All sheds are built on site and the company employs three on-site builders, along with a couple of ‘floaters’ backed up by the support of two administrative/support people. “We tend to stay in the Taupo area – there’s enough work to justify our focus here. I can’t over-emphasise the experience that our builders, engineers and designers have and we pride ourselves in developing a building fit for each clients purposes.” SHEDS Shed Central Ltd When it comes to preparing sites for the shed, equally Shed Central is happy to provide clients with recommendations for doing site prep work ready for the foundations. Looking ahead Trudi says around the Taupo district there’s a growing sense of optimism about the rest of this year and into 2027. “I think what’s happening is people aren’t waiting any longer, they’re just choosing to invest and do what they want to do for their business and this is contagious. Shed Central isn’t the only string to our bow, which puts us in a strong position. We also own and operate a very successful Hire Company.” With a good amount of work planned ahead and the business that comes from their Hire Proudly supporting Shed Central Ltd Visit us 43 Miro Street, Taupo Contact us sales@firstwindowstaupo.co.nz 07 378 9599 firstwindowstaupo.co.nz Contact us today for your window and door needs Richard & Louise Russell 65 Matai St P 07 378 6067 W eandj.nz SPECIALISING IN • House Drainage • Civil & Commercial • Sewer • Stormwater • Soakholes E & J Contractors are proud to be associated with Shed Central Ltd • Water Reticulation • Butt & Fusion Welding • Wastewater Treatment Systems • Fibreglass Jointing & Fabrication • Pump Stations firm, along with their subdivision work, Trudi says there’s plenty to keep the team busy. “I think its simply a case that our reputation speaks for itself. A lot of it is word-of-mouth in these smaller towns and we’ve worked very hard to establish ourselves and the quality of what we do consistently for our clients.” As very much a family owned and operated company and with a history that has seen Andrew building sheds pretty much half his working life, Trudi describes Shed Central as very much a part of the community.
