A pair of houses designed by Parsonson Architects have demonstrated that good architecture can stand the test of time. Two of the practice’s projects received major recognition at the 2026 New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) Wellington Architecture Awards for the Wellington region in the housing category for the H House and an enduring award for the Gibbs House, adding to a long list of honours accumulated by the Wellington practice over several decades. For Parsonson Architects director Gerald Parsonson the recognition is particularly significant because both projects demonstrate the practice’s long-standing commitment to architecture that responds carefully to its surroundings. “The creation of high-quality architecture is an exciting and joyful process that springs from the seed of optimism,” says Gerald. “We enjoy searching for and unlocking the unique potentials in each new project.” The H House, built in 2025, was designed as a highly durable and thermally efficient family home that would sit quietly within its semi-rural setting, providing generous internal spaces and strong connections to the surrounding landscape. The owners’ extensive collection of art and sculpture was an important part of the design. The house, garden, artwork and surrounding landscape were conceived as an interconnected composition, with established trees, views, shadow, natural light and carefully framed glimpses creating a constantly changing experience. The NZIA jury described H House as “carefully resolved”, praising its response to the site, climate and everyday living. The jury noted the home’s calm, sheltered character, restrained materials, carefully framed views and subtle changes in volume between public and private spaces. Gibbs House has a very distinguished history having won NZIA local, regional, colour and national awards in 1999 and 2000, before receiving an enduring award this year. Set among trees overlooking the harbour, the home was conceived as a delicate platform within its wooded environment.
