| 5 Parsonson Architects ARCHITECTS “The creation of high-quality architecture is an exciting and joyful process that springs from the seed of optimism.” The jury praised Gibbs House as “a rare piece of architecture”, highlighting its craftsmanship, relationship with the wooded site and references to regional modernism, California and Scandinavia. “The house is about life in the trees creating a delicate platform amongst them to view the harbour and enjoy the birds and the sun,” explains Gerald. “It has a natural spirit that is part of this special setting.” The jury praised Gibbs House as “a rare piece of architecture”, highlighting its craftsmanship, relationship with the wooded site and references to regional modernism, California and Scandinavia. Its clerestory windows frame views of the local flora, while timber detailing contributes to what the jury described as a serene interior. The two awards reinforce the philosophy behind Parsonson Architects, which has evolved from a practice initially focused on individual houses into a multi-award-winning studio working across residential, community, commercial, hospitality and education projects. “We approach every project through fresh eyes,” says Gerald. “Every site, location, client and set of circumstances creates a unique set of relationships and readings.” Collaboration is also central to the practice’s approach, involving architects, landscape architects, specialist consultants, contractors and suppliers to deliver carefully considered buildings. Supporting the projects and their delivery have been suppliers including Mitre 10 Pahiatua, Brooks Refrigeration, Rigg Zschokke and Plumb U Masterton. Pahiatua pride shines through for Mitre 10 Trade Business of the Year For Mitre 10 Pahiatua, being named Mitre 10 Trade Business of the Year at the 2026 Mitre 10 Conference is more than a mere trophy for the shelf – it is recognition that the team is heading in the right direction. “The award was not something we were expecting, but it’s great because it’s nice to know we’re on the right track,” owner Jacob Cooke-Tait says. “We all enjoy coming to work, and see that rewarded is amazing. It’s the cherry on the top.” Jacob bought the business with his business partner Mark Heginbotham in October 2024, and in less than two years has seen the operation grow signi cantly: today, there are 30 people on the payroll. “There are three major areas a successful retail operation needs to excel in – products, people and promotion,” he says. “We have a great team, good leaders, and we care about service. We do the best by the customer and show up every day with the right attitude.” This philosophy is particularly well suited to Pahiatua, where the community is tight-knit and supporting local businesses is part of the fabric of everyday life. “Everyone knows everyone,” Jacob says. “It’s all about supporting local and buying local, which is great.” That support works both ways: Mitre 10 Pahiatua sponsors several local sports teams and makes a point of getting behind community initiatives wherever it can. The store is also a strong supporter of Mitre 10’s workshops, which Jacob sees as an opportunity to give something back while helping build practical skills for the next generation. “We really enjoy holding the in-store workshops,” he says. “It’s really rewarding to get the next generation interested in Mitre 10 and help them get a few DIY skills under their belts for the future.” Jacob is quick to share the credit for the Mitre 10 Trade Business of the Year award, pointing to the people around the business and the customers who continue to support it. “The Pahiatua community is supportive and friendly – it is such a great community,” he says. “Awards like this are the result of a great team and even better customers – and we’ve got both. “Thank you to everyone in Pahiatua and beyond who’s backed us. This one’s for you."
