Young+Richards is bringing its architectural and collaborative approach to a considered Hawke’s Bay home, working alongside Hales Construction director Josh Hales and his family to create a 400sqm home designed around a hilltop setting with some of the best views available in the region. The multi million dollar project sits on a narrow building platform with views across Te Mata Peak and the Tukituki Valley, presenting challenges that have shaped both its design and construction. Young+Richards Hawke’s Bay regional manager Mat Wilson says the site’s exposure to wind from all directions placed limits on the building’s height and structural detailing, while strict development guidelines further constrained its design. The home has a 2.7m stud, with the trusses also limited in height because of the wind conditions. The building platform could not be moved any closer to the cliff edge without risking it dropping away, leaving a tight footprint while retaining enough grass area for Josh and his young family. The framing of those amazing views became a key part of the design, with large openings providing outlooks in every direction rather than focusing on a single vista. The main bedroom is positioned at a corner of the house to capture views down the valley. Materiality has been carefully considered, with a natural cedar rainscreen selected for the exterior. The timber has been treated with a product designed to allow it to weather to a consistent grey over time. The house also features a membrane system, understood to be only the second or third of its type used in Hawke’s Bay. Young+Richards director Elvon Young says the project reflects the practice’s focus on delivering value without compromising quality or design. “With our collaborative approach, we can offer people everything they want and everything they need using our expertise as designers, and the expertise of our builders and suppliers.” That approach has involved close collaboration between Young+Richards, Josh, his wife, Hales Construction, and the wider project team, with Josh heavily involved in decisions throughout the design process. Mat says Josh brings an unusually strong understanding of design to his building work, making the collaboration even more effective. Mat and Josh have previously worked together on about 15 industrial and commercial projects, but this home has allowed them to combine that experience in a residential setting. He says the relationship has been a highlight, particularly because residential design is a core strength of Young+Richards, allowing the practice to bring its expertise to a different type of project with Josh. Young+Richards director Harriet Pilkington says the site’s connection with the surrounding landscape has been central, with landscaping by Pollen Workshop’s Willie Murphy helping blur the boundary between the house and its setting. “It’s a really stunning site, and we are always very happy when we get a site like this,” she says. “The connection between the building and the land is a strong part of the story, and we’re pleased both Josh and Willie could see the value in that as well.” RESIDENTIAL & COMMERCIAL ELECTRICAL SERVICES New Builds | Home Renovations | Additions Switchboards | Landscaping lighting Hot water cylinder repairs | General Maintenance 0508 278 7326 astream.co.nz Call now for a FREE quote
