Peter Pask leads a small team of enthusiastic architectural design professionals based in Hastings. He established the studio having worked in an architectural practice, keen to explore an independent career and bring his skills to the table across a broad array of building forms. The practice is also a member of ADNZ, an organisation Peter says he joined for the collegiality it brings. “ADNZ is very much an advocate for architectural designers and an engaging space professionally. It also acts as a sounding post for all the legislative and regulatory changes that impact our work and keeps us up to speed with the latest professional information we need to be aware of.” Peter says he’s keen, for instance, to see the work done to bring professional risk into a structure that is fair, with proportional liability forming part of new rules impacting professional responsibility boundaries. “There’s going to be a consultation phase shortly on this issue and that’s a good thing for our sector.” Peter acknowledges that his first desire was to be a builder, however as fate would have it, when the opportunity to work for an architect came up when he moved to the Bay, it altered his life path somewhat. “As an architectural designer I do everything. I’m Design 2 Licensed, which limits me to buildings under 10 metres in height. I also don’t do schools, but absolutely everything else can cross my desk.” Asked how business has been Peter says things had been quieter last year, but at that time there was a backlog of work in the pipeline. He’s observed the markets in both residential and commercial have picked up somewhat. Design work encompasses new builds, alterations, seismic work as well as preparation of engineering drawings, so there’s plenty of variety for the team. Having been in the design sector so long, Peter says he’s built up a solid group of builders and industry contacts all over New Zealand. This, he says, really helps when clients first interface with him over a project. The firm has earned a strong reputation working with heritage restoration and additions. These projects, Peter reflects, are particularly satisfying, as owners want to remain in a home they love for its character and age, while still finding ways to articulate new treatment of spaces. And when it comes to alterations, Peter stresses that its very important that client and builder get on well. “I sometimes refer clients to a group of builders so they can see how each one fits their personality. It’s often underestimated just how important that relationship is. It’s the first thing you have to think about.” 021 450 160 www.jpwbuilders.co.nz jarrod@jpwbuilders.co.nz Jarrod Williams Custom Crafted For Life With decades of experience between them, our Hawkes Bay team have delighted clients all over the region with award-winning, custom built fibreglass pools. 06 876 5408 | 027 484 9116 hawkesbay@mayfairpools.co.nz mayfairpools.co.nz Get In Touch Today Recently, Peter says, he’s been working on some large homes, up to 1000m2 which have been very engaging projects to be responsible for. He was also involved in the design of luxury accommodation offerings at Black Barn Accommodation in Hawke’s Bay, comprising 15 beautiful accommodation retreats. Each lodge is fully self-contained, for those seeking a quiet escape or a place from which to explore all the region has to offer. Each cottage reflects a unique character and style. “I really enjoyed being involved in this inspiring project at Black Barn Vineyard.” “I sometimes refer clients to a group of builders so they can see how each one fits their personality. It’s often underestimated just how important that relationship is.” Pete says in time he’ll step back somewhat from studio life with the plan that some of the existing team will take over leadership roles. “That’s a good way to do handing over in my opinion.”
