62 | T T Karen Phelps Updated outdoor seating area a hit The bakery team has also been busy developing a wider range of products. Since siblings Monique and Tim Kloeg took ownership of the family business Ten O’clock Cookie Bakery Café in Masterton about two and a half years ago the pair have worked hard to put their stamp on things. “We have grown up in the business so owning it is pretty special. I always acted like I owned it anyway but it definitely feels different. The buck stops with us now,” says Monique with a laugh. Originally started by their parents John and Anneke Kloeg, who established the business around 38 years ago after immigrating to New Zealand from the Netherlands, she admits they have big shoes to fill. One of the most noticeable changes the siblings have made has been the updated outdoor seating area in front of the Queen Street café. “Council has re-done all the centre of town so we took this as a good opportunity to freshen up the outdoor area and increase seating with a state-of-the-art louvre system, which has been very popular,” explains Monique. The business is renowned for its handcrafted cookies and artisan pastries and takes pride using the finest local ingredients. It also offers celebration cakes, products for special occasions such as Christmas, Valentines Day and Mother’s and Father’s Day and catering, from corporate morning teas and office lunches to weddings, funerals and family gatherings. The bakery team has also been busy developing a wider range of products with a particular emphasis on catering for different dietary requirements. Gluten-free, vegan and dairy-free options have been introduced alongside the traditional cookies, pastries, cakes, slices and savoury food the business is known for. Monique says variety is a key part of the offering, with the bakery range including flourless orange and almond cakes, vegan chocolate cake, flourless chocolate almond muffins, Florentine biscuits, bacon and egg keto bites, and a selection of sweet and savoury slices. The kitchen also produces chicken aioli, salmon and falafel Buddha bowls, bacon, mushroom and spinach egg rolls, as well as sandwiches, salads, quiches and other light lunches. “We try to have something for everybody,” she says. “We have an amazing bakery team who are super creative and always looking to do something new.” Some of the new recipes have come directly from Monique herself including the popular buckwheat slice. The recipe began with an experiment after Monique sprouted buckwheat in an effort to make it more digestible. She then decided to try baking it and coating it in chocolate. “It’s now one of our most popular products,” says Monique. REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Ten O’clock Cookie Bakery Café The next major step in the business’s evolution will be the opening of a new bakery in Lower Hutt, planned for the first week of December. The bakery will be located at 11 Parliament Street in Melling, close to Melling Station. Tim, who owns Wellington Refrigeration, recently purchased a new building for that business and Ten O’clock Cookie Bakery Café will occupy half of the premises for its new bakery operation. “It’s a big expansion for the company and very exciting,” says Monique. “This bakery will have a real emphasis on takeaway and foot traffic customers.” “We have an amazing bakery team who are super creative.” Well done, Ten O’Clock Cookie As a leading supplier of bakery ingredient solutions, Mauri offers a comprehensive portfolio of high-quality flours, yeasts, grains, bread and cake pre-mixes, and improvers.
