Taranaki has shed nearly 2,000 highskilled oil and gas jobs in the past few years, according to a recent industry report. Against that backdrop, engineering company Entec is investing in a major new facility that reflects its confidence in the region’s future, building infrastructure for New Zealand’s electrification. The family business was founded in 1982 by David Weston to supply equipment to the oil and gas sector. When his son, Bob, took the reins, he recognised that future growth meant diversifying - expanding into industrial electrical engineering and infrastructure for projects including solar farms, battery energy storage systems and fast EV charging networks. Today, the original oil and gas equipment business accounts for just 15 percent of Entec’s revenue, with the remaining 85 percent coming from the areas it has diversified into. The company has just brought its Taranaki operations together at an expanded site in Bell Block, New Plymouth, on an 8,000-square-metre property that includes 2,300 square metres of manufacturing space. Approximately 100 of Entec’s 110 staff are based there, with 40 percent of them designing, engineering and manufacturing electrical infrastructure on site. Bob says the investment reflects the business’s confidence in the region, even as traditional sectors contract. “We’re really proud of the fact that we’re able to grow our footprint in the region despite that, by winning work out of the region and executing the work in Taranaki,” he says.
