While the share of revenue sourced locally has dropped from 70 percent to 25 percent, salaries and wages paid in Taranaki have more than doubled. Recent projects include geothermal work for Contact Energy and Mercury, Hiringa Energy’s hydrogen refuelling network, and fast EV chargers installed in towns from Hamilton and Dannevirke through to Cromwell and Queenstown. “We’ve managed to pivot an awful lot from oil, gas and petrochem into the broader electrification and decarbonisation sphere,” Bob says. “We’ve held our original revenue from oil and gas and petrochem, which is great, because they’re really good customers and that’s really important to New Zealand, but we’ve built a huge amount of new revenue out of these newer areas.” One of Entec’s fastest-growing divisions manufactures prefabricated switchrooms and substations - including charging infrastructure buildings for Auckland’s electrified ferry fleet, built in Taranaki and shipped north ready to connect. It has become the largest of Entec’s six business units, with its 90th building due for delivery by the end of the year. Manufacturing off-site like this cuts construction time for customers across the country. Bob says Entec is investing heavily in its people too, training 41 apprentices over the past five years at a cost of close to $1 million.
