| 77 Eastbridge Ltd MANUFACTURING T T Karen Phelps Maintained a diverse project portfolio The company holds Steel Construction New Zealand (SCNZ) Steel Fabricator Certification level CC4. New Zealand’s steel fabrication industry remains highly competitive with a shortage of larger work packages creating a challenging environment for companies. Despite the difficult market Eastbridge has maintained a diverse project portfolio and is continuing to invest in its operation, says general manager Jayden Mellsop. Among the company’s recently completed projects was a series of large ballast deck bridges for KiwiRail at sites scattered throughout the South Island. It has also completed level crossing upgrades at three Auckland Transport sites with the projects designed to prepare for increased train volumes following the opening of the City Rail Link. The work included pedestrian bridges with lift shafts spanning railway lines, with tight programmes and the challenges of working over operational rail infrastructure. “Much of the work had to be carried out during public holidays when the railway lines could be closed,” explains Jayden. “Eastbridge used a modular, repeatable bridge design, allowing as much preassembly as possible to be completed off site before the structures were installed in a single lift.” Another recently completed project was a single-lane weathering steel bridge for Hick Construction at Glenbrook Road in Hawke’s Bay. The company is now starting work on a plate girder bridge, Waikawa Bridge, north of Levin, as part of the southern section of the Ōtaki to north of Levin project Te Pae o Tararua. It is also supporting local contractors working on the Hawke’s Bay Expressway, including Brian Perry Civil, which is constructing the Meeanee Road and Kennedy Road bridges, and HEB Construction on the Tūtaekurī Bridge. Eastbridge is providing site steelwork support on the projects. Eastbridge is also in the early stages of a project with sister company Napier Engineering & Contracting (NEC) at Ravensdown’s sulphur melter project in Hawke’s Bay. Its work will encompass mechanical, structural steel and piping. “It’s a fairly intensive project where we have to install the new componentry during a plant shutdown,” says Jayden. “There are aspects of the plant that will remain live while we do our work so it’s a complex site installation project with strict health and safety.” Jayden says Eastbridge’s unique position in the market stems from its focus on quality and skill, supported by significant investment in new technology and equipment. Located within two kilometres of the Port of Napier, it is ideally situated to serve both national and international markets. The company holds Steel Construction New Zealand (SCNZ) Steel Fabricator Certification level CC4 and is affiliated with key industry organisations including the Heavy Engineering Research Association (HERA), providing clients with assurance of its competency and quality. Jayden says that with surplus capacity Eastbridge is actively looking for further projects and using the quieter period to invest in its future. It continues to maintain a strong apprenticeship programme, aiming to have eight to 10 apprentices at any one time. Two apprentices have graduated this year. “We’re very focused on keeping the next generation coming through,” says Jayden. A new senior staff member, James Lake, has also joined the business. “James has an extensive track record of successful project delivery within the infrastructure sector and brings a wealth of experience. His disciplined approach is proving very valuable during this fiscally tight period within the market cycle,” says Jayden. Jayden says the investments reflect Eastbridge’s focus on retaining capability and being ready to respond when larger infrastructure opportunities return dependent on election results and other external factors. CNC Profile Cutting Services has been serving New Zealand’s key industrial sectors for over two decades – earning a solid reputation for its cutting-edge technology, customer-first approach, and a commitment to delivering on spec, on time, every time. “Our strength is in our people and our processes. Every component we cut meets the strictest quality standards, ensuring unmatched accuracy and repeatability for our customers” says managing director Andrew Ayre. A key part of that capability is CNC Procut’s K5000. A high-capacity cutting system capable of plasma and gas cutting, as well as drilling, tapping, countersinking and counterboring. Alongside our brake presses; 900T, 600T and 320T. For customers working with heavy plate, having these processes available in-house means fewer steps, less handling and greater control over the finished product. And still the company keeps growing. A new 16-metre x 3-metre laser with bevel-head capability is currently on its way. Once operational, it will bring CNC Procut’s laser fleet to three machines, significantly increasing its capacity for large-format and precision laser work. For CNC Procut, supporting Eastbridge is a great opportunity to support another local business and contribute to the strength of our local industry. “We’re here to provide New Zealand industry with the best processing solutions, the best materials, and the best service.” Cutting Big, Forming Big, Becoming even Bigger!
