84 | Growth has brought investment in machinery, staff, and infrastructure, while the company’s in-house workshop and experienced operators help maintain efficiency. “We have got our own workshop and a very clever mechanic, and our guys are mechanically minded as well,” Peter says. “There is not much we don’t do ourselves.” With about 13 staff, PJ Warren Earthmoving has built a strong team culture based on loyalty, experience, and looking after each other. “When Hayden first started with us, the first thing he noticed was that everyone wanted to be here and everyone wanted to work,” Peter says. While the industry faces challenges, including compliance requirements and finding skilled staff, Peter believes the company’s broad range of services remains a major strength. From crushing and supplying aggregates to earthworks, drainage, river protection, and civil projects, PJ Warren Earthmoving continues to provide the machinery, skills, and experience needed to support the Wairarapa’s growth. “We have got more machines than operators, and that gives us the ability to flex across a really diverse range of work,” Peter says. T T Kelly Deeks Versatile earthmoving and aggregate specialists With an extensive fleet of heavy machinery, a team with a diverse range of specialist skills, and more than three decades of experience, PJ Warren Earthmoving has built a reputation as one of the Wairarapa’s most versatile earthmoving and aggregate specialists. From large-scale civil projects and subdivision development to river maintenance, flood recovery, farm drainage, water storage, and supplying quality aggregates, the Featherston-based business has the equipment and expertise to tackle a wide range of work across the region. Director Peter Warren says the company’s ability to manage such a broad range of projects comes from having the right people, machinery, and skills all under one roof. “We can do small jobs, big jobs, and everything in between,” he says. PJ Warren Earthmoving has been particularly busy following significant flooding in Southern Wairarapa, supporting regional recovery efforts through its river maintenance work with the Regional Council. “We have been flat out with the floods,” Peter says. “These floods have been unprecedented. We have not seen floods at those levels for many years.” CONTRACTING PJ Warren Earthmoving The flooding damaged bridges, affected riverbanks, and created potential risks for farmland, stock, and properties. PJ Warren Earthmoving has been involved in clearing damaged waterways, restoring access tracks, and helping repair areas impacted by the extreme weather. Alongside its river work, PJ Warren Earthmoving supplies gravel and base courses throughout the region. It operates multiple yards and several gravel extraction sites, with Featherston as its main retail yard. The company’s extensive capability has allowed it to take on projects across the Wairarapa, including an ongoing subdivision development in Martinborough. The project reflects continued growth in the popular wine and tourism destination. “Martinborough has got all of the vineyards, and it is a tourist town,” Peter says. “There are a lot of restaurants and bars now, and although it still has a small population, there are always people there in the weekends.” Since establishing the business in 1992, Peter has continued to develop PJ Warren Earthmoving, with the gravel operation becoming an increasingly important part of the company’s future. Operations manager Hayden O’Connor is now helping guide its next stage of growth.
