He is fantastic at diagnosing issues and finding suitable solutions.” T T Kelly Deeks A career built around technical expertise Paul began his career with Trevor Rink at Farm Water Developments in 1976 and has spent 50 years building his knowledge. Taumarunui Plumbing is celebrating national recognition for director Paul Stephens, whose five decades in the trade and commitment to developing the next generation have earned him the 2026 Mark Whitehead Training Leader of the Year award. Paul was nominated by Master Plumbers Waikato president Jacob Smith after first winning recognition at the Waikato Master Plumbers awards. He was named the national winner at the Master Plumbers awards in Waikato on June 26th, putting a spotlight on a career built around technical expertise, high standards, and an enduring willingness to help others. Taumarunui Plumbing general manager Tania Jones says the award reflects qualities that have made Paul an influential figure within Taumarunui Plumbing and the wider King Country trade community. Paul began his career with Trevor Rink at Farm Water Developments in 1976 and has spent 50 years building his knowledge across an unusually broad range of plumbing and drainage work. That experience is particularly valuable as Taumarunui Plumbing has a substantial rural customer base alongside residential and commercial customers. Projects range from replacing a tap washer to developing large farm water supplies, giving apprentices exposure to a wide variety of practical challenges. Paul’s local knowledge is another advantage. Born and raised in the area, he understands the landscape, the water systems, and the requirements of the community, while his technical knowledge allows him to diagnose difficult problems and develop practical solutions. “He is a walking encyclopedia,” Tania says. “He is fantastic at diagnosing issues and finding suitable solutions.” Over his career Paul has trained more than 10 apprentices, with some going on to establish their own businesses. His influence also extends to tradesmen and colleagues who have sought his advice throughout their careers. His approach to training combines handson experience with encouragement, gradually increasing responsibility as apprentices build their skills and confidence. He promotes curiosity, answers questions, and helps people work through challenges rather than simply providing the answer. Paul has also supported the industry beyond the workplace, taking part in career expos at local schools and embracing the Gateway programme, giving students an opportunity to experience plumbing and drainlaying as a potential career pathway. For Tania, his availability is one of his defining strengths. Paul remains approachable to employees, customers, suppliers, and fellow tradespeople, and is still willing to take a call 24/7 when someone is facing a difficult problem. Taumarunui Plumbing CONTRACTING Paul’s commitment also includes keeping pace with new products, systems, technology, and changing industry requirements, while maintaining a strong focus on quality and safety. This national award recognises more than technical ability, it acknowledges the contriPLUMBING & BATHROOMWARE Premium vanity, shower, tapware & accessory brands.
