Napier-based building business Davcon Construction was established by registered master builder Julian Davis in 2004 and works across the Hawke’s Bay and Taupō regions. Jules is proud of the fact that since this founding, he’s provided a significant number of apprentices with the opportunity to learn great construction skills and many have stayed with the company, long after gaining qualifications. He’s also a firm believer in the value of the school Gateway Programmes, which affords students still at school the opportunity to experience a taste of working in real building situations. “It’s a very good way to give them a taste of life as a builder and is a secure stepping stone and often helps them decide whether building is what they would like to do as a career,” Jules says. Davcon currently engages four apprentices and Jules was planning to take on two more. He says, that of his current team, perhaps only three or four, were not initially engaged as apprentices in the company, a track-record he is extremely proud of. One of his own children, now an apprentice worked one day a week as a Gateway student before leaving school. Apprentices are trained through BCITO, which Jules says is a good system.
