When Scott Lawry talks about quality, there is no room for compromise. For the owner of Scotts Roofing in Levin, every product, fixing, sealant and installation method is scrutinised before it reaches a customer’s home or commercial building, a practice that has helped build the company’s reputation since its establishment in 2017. Scott’s pathway into the industry began long before that. He first worked alongside his father during school holidays before completing a building apprenticeship and working across a range of trades. An eight-year stint in Asia as a marine engineer followed, contributing valuable project management and problem-solving experience before he returned to New Zealand and committed to the roofing industry. Today, Scotts Roofing employs 10 staff and works across residential and commercial roofing, wall cladding systems and waterproofing projects throughout the lower North Island. “We have one quality here and that is perfect. We don’t do anything that could be halfdone. We might not be the cheapest people in the industry, but we offer a top-quality job no matter what happens.” This focus extends well beyond installation. Scott says roofing has become increasingly technical, with building codes, materials and compliance requirements continually evolving. The company closely monitors developments overseas, particularly in Australia and the United States, often adapting to emerging trends before they become standard practice in New Zealand. The growing range of roofing and cladding products has also created new demands on installers. From specialised membranes through to modern architectural wall cladding systems, Scotts Roofing invests heavily in training to ensure staff remain current with product requirements and installation standards. “For every different product we lay our hands on, we have to go and do a course. I see that as fantastic because there are so many products out there. The training is invaluable.” The company’s standards extend to product testing as well. Scott says new products are not simply accepted at face value, with everything from sealants to screws assessed before being used on projects. “I get people coming to me all the time trying to sell new products. We won’t touch anything until it’s approved and we’ve done our own testing. Everything gets tested before it goes onto somebody’s house or commercial building.” Those strict standards have helped Scotts Roofing secure a growing portfolio of high-profile commercial projects. Among the most visible are multiple McDonald’s redevelopments, including Paraparaumu, Lower Hutt and Johnsonville. Scott says the relationship developed after the company demonstrated its ability to overcome unforeseen challenges while maintaining project timelines and budgets. The Lower Hutt project proved particularly significant, combining roofing and distinctive architectural wall cladding that has attracted strong interest from visitors and building professionals alike. “We managed to bring all the additional work into the original programme and still complete it on time. The guys did an absolutely amazing job.” Another standout project was the redevelopment of the Mahara Gallery in Waikanae, where Scotts Roofing worked alongside longterm construction partner Crowe Construction and the wider project team to help deliver a striking architectural finish. These projects reflect what the company strives for on every job, regardless of size. “The architect, the builders and ourselves have done a beautiful job to make these buildings really stand out and last for generations to come.”
