INTERIORS Pennant & Triumph T T Virginia Wright “We want customers to walk into the store and immediately understand what it’s about, to feel like they’re in a lodge in New Zealand, even if they’re in New York or LA.” Set up in 2012 as a boutique architecture and interiors company with a focus on retail, workspace and hospitality, for Pennant & Triumph designing retail interiors has become an increasingly important part of what they do. Their clients may have a strong presence in New Zealand, but it’s in helping them make their mark globally that Pennant & Triumph really show what they are capable of, with an office both here and in Sydney. “We’re very good at working with clients to understand their brief and then establishing a concept to bring that to life,” says director and founder Justin Roderique. “We’ve had a lot of success with re-inventing iconic New Zealand brands, including Rodd & Gunn, Macpac, Bendon and Icebreaker, to make them more relevant in today’s market, and keeping them in touch with global retail trends.” Last year, Justin and his team were an integral part of the New Zealand outdoor brand Macpac, established in Christchurch in 1973 and opening 27 stores across Australia. “Retail design is about showcasing a brand and their product, and using storytelling to give a customer who doesn’t know the brand, whatever it is, a sense of that brand’s DNA as soon as they walk in the door,” says Justin. For Macpac stores, that means using authentic materials, such as timber and stone, which immediately give a sense of New Zealand and the natural environment. Working with another classic New Zealand brand, Rodd & Gunn, they came up with the concept of making customers feel like they are in a typical South Island luxury lodge, rather than a retail store, Justin explains. “It’s all about customer experience. The better you feel in a store, the more positive you’ll feel about that brand, and it’s even more important when we’re going to places like London or the US. “We want customers to walk into the store and immediately understand what it’s about, to feel like they’re in a lodge in New Zealand, even if they’re in New York or LA.” The interior Pennant & Triumph created for Hana Parnell’s Wellness Treatment Space has just been named a winner in this year’s Architecture Now Interior Design awards. Built with the customer experience in mind, it’s designed to be a calming, relaxing space from the moment you walk in the door. It’s the second Hana interior they have designed and built with Build This, and it offers such a positive experience for customers that it’s bringing in new business from people who love the look – and it’s not the first time that’s happened. Justin attributes a lot of the architectural and interior design work they do in Queenstown to people who’ve gone into Rodd & Gunn and really like their South Island lodge feel. “We’re working on a development in Queenstown doing both the architecture and the interior design, so we can do either on their own or both together,” he says. Pennant & Triumph work across retail, hospitality and workspaces, including offices, wellness centres, and showrooms, such as the new, luxury car showroom in Sydney, for which they are currently working up a concept. Regardless of who a client is, they put their depth of experience to work to turn their brief into a home, an office or a retail store that isn’t just fit-for-purpose, but has the well-crafted and carefully thought-out sense of space that comes with good architecture and design.
