Following on from their success in winning Excellence in Community Contribution for South and East Auckland at the 2024 2degrees Auckland Business Awards, the Beautification Trust recently claimed top spot in the same category at the awards’ Best of the Best ceremony. The event celebrates the very best of business in the Auckland region, recognising hard work, dedication and innovation. Operating as a social enterprise, the Beautification Trust’s mission is to connect and empower communities to learn, love and look after their environment. Since 2001, it has been leading beautification projects, community events, zero waste programmes and environmental education throughout South and East Auckland. Trust CEO Daniel Barthow says the accolade showcases a positive story coming out of South Auckland, and highlights what can be achieved when people work together towards achieving a collective vision. “It’s really special for us to have this recognition for our team and our volunteers, and the amazing partners we work with,” he says. “It is an honour for us to serve our local community and environment through working in partnership and having such a great team of volunteers and staff, who are able to do that hard work, day in and day out.” The trust endeavours to operate in as accessible a way as possible, with community events and activities run under its auspices offered for free, or at a low cost. “We try and make it fun for the community by supporting change for good in a positive way,” Daniel says. Serving as a central hub for the trust’s Zero Waste Programme for South Aucklanders is the Manurewa Community Recycling Centre. Projects like repair cafes, a reuse store and a Boomer Shed have been developed hand in hand with the community to further reduce waste. The community workshop, Boomer Shed, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. “It has made a long-standing impact across the past 10 years. Recently, an incredible project involved volunteers handcrafting a stunning seven-and-a-half-metre-wide sensory mural for the Blind and Low Vision Education Network NZ.” Daniel says another exciting achievement for the trust has been the recent addition of Auckland’s Bike Hub in Manurewa. Operated by the Beautification Trust, with support from Auckland Transport, the hub is helping to break down barriers to cycling in the area. It provides bike repair and maintenance workshops, and also sells refurbished donated bikes. “There was a real need for this in Manurewa. It has had a lot of support from the community with large numbers of people going through when it’s open, (Thursday to Saturday 10am to 4pm, at 1 Dalgety Drive). Often, young people can be found there learning bike mechanical skills.” Another significant milestone, starting this July, sees the Beautification Trust and the Tread Lightly Charitable Trust (TLCT) joining forces to strengthen environmental learning and behaviour change initiatives across Tāmaki Makaurau. “We’re super excited about the possibilities ahead with the Tread Lightly programme, and being able to share sustainability messages in engaging new ways,” Daniel says. 8 | Family mill offers specialist skills Tauriko Sawmill’s versatility sets it apart in an industry increasingly dominated by large-scale operations. REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Tauriko Sawmill T T Karen Phelps Three decades of expertise positions Tauriko Sawmill as Bay of Plenty’s go-to source for timber. The family-owned sawmill based in Tauranga has successfully carved out a unique niche in the industry, combining traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge, sustainable solutions to serve customers ranging from weekend gardeners to high-end construction, says company owner Michael Moores. “We are small enough to be able to service the needs of the public for small quantities of products, and large enough to service the needs of customers who want larger quantities for full architectural new builds,” Michael says. Tauriko Sawmill, established by Rob Moores in the early 1990s, continues to thrive under the leadership of his son Michael and general manager Stephen Lee. The business represents more than three decades of timber expertise, and five generations of the Moores family involvement in New Zealand’s timber industry. The sawmill’s versatility sets it apart in an industry increasingly dominated by large-scale operations. It specialises in both common and bespoke timber profiles, manufacturing everything from interior sarking, shiplap panelling, flooring and trim, to exterior weatherboards, fascia and decking. The sawmill employs 12 staff, and prides itself on maintaining a family-oriented culture – increasingly rare in the industry. The business sources timber both locally and internationally, with timber coming from across New Zealand alongside imported species from Japan and North America. The operation encompasses the entire production chain, from raw logs to finished products. Logs are initially cut to size before being processed through the manufacturing plant via moulders and planers to create finished products. The mill’s experienced staff members, including specialist timber machinists, ensure precise profiles for specific manufacturing requirements. Nothing goes to waste, with off-cuts transformed into firewood, chip, and shavings for animal bedding, demonstrating the circular economy principles increasingly important to modern consumers. Tauriko Sawmill stocks an impressive range of hardwood and softwood timber varieties, and Stephen says it can source any required timber type customers might require. The product range spans the entire construction spectrum, from structural timber for major builds to specialised cladding for architectural projects. Its ability to provide both standard profiles and custom solutions positions it uniquely within the supply chain. “No job is too big or too small,” says Michael. “We can give people advice and provide exactly what they need.” Innovation remains central to the business strategy, with significant investment planned for the manufacturing plant over the next 12 to18 months. The sawmill is also introducing new environmentally friendly products, including thermally modified timber that offers superior durability without chemical treatments. “It gives longevity to pine so it can be used for outdoor applications without being chemically treated,” explains Stephen. “The thermally modified process of heat and steam removes sugars from the fibre, dramatically increasing stability and durability of the timber. | 9 T T Kim Newth Seasoned apprentice takes top spot Pacific Steel’s Michael Vitale taking out the Manufacturing Apprentice of the Year title at New Zealand’s inaugural Minister for Manufacturing Awards. REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT NZ & Pacific Steel Steel manufacturing’s role in driving prosperity and success in Aotearoa was highlighted at New Zealand’s inaugural Minister for Manufacturing Awards in May, with Pacific Steel’s Michael Vitale taking out the Manufacturing Apprentice of the Year title, and New Zealand Steel being an award finalist for Excellence in Process Innovation. New Zealand Steel, and Pacific Steel, both part of the international BlueScope stable, have long played a significant part in shaping New Zealand’s economy. New Zealand Steel – the country’s sole producer of flat rolled steel products – operates the Glenbrook steel mill and pioneered the use of locally sourced ironsand. Pacific Steel has been serving local market needs for more than 60 years as the country’s only local manufacturer of wire rod, reinforcing bar and coil products. Mike’s success at the Minister for Manufacturing Awards follows his double victory at New Zealand Steel’s 2024 New Zealand and Pacific Island awards, at which he was named Mechanical Apprentice of the Year and overall Apprentice of the Year. “We’re very proud of Mike,” says Oliver Pullein, operations manager for Pacific Steel. “What makes it all the more special is that Mike has worked for our business now for 15 years, all across the mill. He’s driven fork hoists at the front end of the process, he’s worked in the main control pulpit and on the floor of our manufacturing plant, and he’s run the back end of the mill in the finished good processing area as a production team leader.” Mike came from a mechanical background when he started at Pacific Steel in 2009. Having moved through various operational, team leader and workshop roles through the years, he says he was ready to step back into the mechanical side when he approached Oliver in 2022 seeking permission to start a mechanical engineering apprenticeship through Competenz at Pacific Steel. Going back to the classroom in his 40s must have been daunting, but Mike says his beautiful wife and three teenage girls were a big motivator for him to show them the benefits of study and hard work. At the awards, Mike was praised for remarkable dedication in completing theory components early, and for his impressive focus on health and safety. Another employee has since started an inhouse mechanical apprenticeship, too, and is doing very well. “For us, it’s about getting the right person, rather than simply filling a position because we have it,” says Oliver. William Malloy at Competenz, and Eddie Green at Pacific Steel – who has been with the company for over 46 years – have both been very helpful to Mike. Additionally, over 100 lineal metres of marine grade hydrophilic WPM 1955 waterstop was detailed around the piles on the foundation. One of the key highlights of this project is how the ARDEX membrane was integrated into the existing heritage-listed building, Campbell House. Ensuring a successful tanking system while preserving the historical façade structures was vital for this project. Challenges and Solutions The project faced several challenges, but through close collaboration and teamwork, these were successfully overcome. One of the major challenges during construction was water build-up. Icon, the main contractor, had pumps running continuously to remove the water, allowing Sansom, the waterproo ing installer, to lay the tanking system e ectively. The ARDEX Technical team worked closely with the waterproo ing installer (Sansom), architect (Ashton Mitchell), and main contractor (Icon) by providing on and o -site support. REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Far North ITM “Our aim is to offer a wide cohort of customers the products and advice they need to get the job done.” Danielle Moa, managing director of Far North ITM says it’s the years of hard work and careful strategic thinking that have brought the business, operating in Mangonui and Kaitaia, to the positive space it is in today. “We bought the business in February 2012. It was a business about to close. We came in on the back end of it and picked it up,” Danielle says. That original entity was Mangonui ITM, which changed its name to Far North ITM. Five years later, the Kaitaia store was established, providing product and service delivery straddling both coasts. Then five years ago, another business was set up, manufacturing frames and trusses to support the construction of more homes – desperately needed in the district. “Out two ITM stores are 35 minutes apart, giving much greater access to our product and service offering. Both stores predominantly service the trades, with a strong DIY market in the Mangonui area,” says Danielle. The district has a large number of old baches, hence the priority, among many, to service owners doing up their beachside homes. “We also ensure our rural customers are well-served with their needs. Our aim is to offer a wide cohort of customers the products and advice they need to get the job done.” As a key employer in the region, Danielle says Far North ITM plays its part in providing people of all levels and experiences with opportunities to gain meaningful employment, and to grow valuable skills toward a career path. “We take entry-level staff through a three- or four-month induction process, so they have a good picture of how this business operates. Learning how to interact with customers in meaningful ways has an important part to play as well. We also rely on our valued suppliers regarding specific technical information for our team to pass on to customers.” Far North ITM is now embarking on developing a training programme through the frame & truss plant, which will incorporate the builders and possibly iwi. Danielle says the whole impetus behind this initiative was to grow their own tradies in the Far North. “If we can start their journey in the building realm by first completing their training in the frame & truss plant, they can come out 18 months later as a qualified truss fabricator level 3. Through this, trainees have learnt to build the bones of a house and have the opportunity for site visits as they put the finished product in place on-site. This gives them a good understanding of how the finished product is put together. “Once this training is completed, they could pick up an apprenticeship with a builder. Work still needs to be done in this area with BCITO on the cross credits to reduce the time in apprenticeship.” Far North ITM also focuses on New Zealand-made products as much as possible, and where possible, sources some of its timber from Northpine, another Northland business. “Everything we do is about the roll-on effect to the local economy and community living in a region we hold a great deal of pride in and want to see it flourish.” Danielle says having hands-on owners operating the company is key. “You have customers dealing with the person who can make the decision, boots on the ground. It’s not going through a big corporate ladder to the person who can say yes or no.
