At Ormiston Senior College in Flat Bush, Auckland, modern learning is being supported by modern infrastructure - thanks to a modular solution delivered by Portacom in partnership with the Ministry of Education. Faced with growing student needs and a tight delivery window, the Ministry engaged Portacom to deliver the equivalent of 23 modular teaching spaces, two toilet blocks, and a specially designed Special Needs Unit (SNU). Delivered in two stages due to funding allocations, the project presented complex challenges - from ground conditions and power constraints to consenting hurdles and design changes. Despite these pressures, Portacom’s team worked closely with Mitchell Construction and other key stakeholders to deliver a tailored, future-ready solution. Stage one began with extensive planning to accommodate the unique requirements of the SNU. Stage two included additional classrooms and toilet facilities, along with purpose-designed specialty spaces such as a food technology room, science dry lab, and art room. The result was a seamless, integrated complex of V3.0 Interlink Modular buildings, complete with screw pile foundations, custom-built decks, and efficient stormwater systems. “Everything from the build quality to the coordination across trades ran smoothly,” said the school’s principal. “It’s a modern learning space that reflects the needs of our community.” What made this project a standout was not just the speed and scale - but the flexibility. While waiting for permanent power from Vector, the team implemented a temporary solution using generators, ensuring parts of the site could be occupied ahead of schedule. Extensive pre-planning also enabled Portacom to land and install 20 modules in just one day - a significant achievement in logistics and precision. Portacom’s approach reflects a deep understanding of the New Zealand education environment: seismic stability, adaptable layouts, rapid deployment, and minimal disruption to the school term.
