BUILDING By the time Paul Boyd joined Northland-based NPM Construction 21 years ago, he already had 20 years’ building experience behind him, and he very quickly moved into the role of construction manager. Back then it was called Northland Property Maintenance, and their workload was mainly insurance repairs, and the maintenance of commercial and industrial plants and buildings. It wasn’t long before Paul took the opportunity to become a shareholder in the company, along with the role of general manager, and the decision was soon made to expand the operations and the client base, along with giving it the new name. “We started to look further afield and ramp up our tenders for commercial projects, including new builds, additions and alterations,” says Paul. “We needed to increase our strands of work, so we started doing work for the likes of the Ministry of Education, Kainga Ora, the Ministry of Health and so on.” Fast forward to 2025, and the team of eight that Paul joined in 2004 has expanded to 55, with several projects running at any one time, including high-end projects like the recently completed design-and-build $7 million laminated timber construction of Bream Bay College, and the new church in Paihia for the Latter Day Saints. Insurance work still makes up part of the NPM Construction workload, along with commercial and residential, and Paul keeps an overview of the complete operation, paying particular attention to Health & Safety and HR, while continuing to develop relationships with current and potential clients. “It’s about continual planning with my team. We’re working through project issues, especially resourcing issues, on a day-to-day basis, and obviously it’s about having good people in the right roles you can delegate to, which I have. “They’ve generally had their own companies themselves, or operated at a high level in other companies before coming to join us, like Pieter Kalis our commercial construction manager, who’s been with us for 10 years and is across all the commercial projects, and our residential construction manager Richard Potter, who has also been with us for 10 years and manages the insurance workload and the residential alterations, additions and new builds,” explains Paul. Over the years they have completed a number of builds for the Ministry of Education, gradually increasing in value and complexity as they have built their reputation for having sound systems in place for Health & Safety, quality of workmanship and attention to detail, all underpinned by flexibility, communication and professionalism. Their latest project is at Tauroroa Area School, 20 minutes south of Whangarei, near Maungakaramea. The school caters for 440 pupils from Year 1 to Year 13, with a total of 31 classrooms and various other facilities, including a community library and heated pool. The much-needed replacement of several temporary classrooms involves a purpose-built classroom block and adds a 135sqm Whare Ako.
