Today, that legacy continues under the leadership of Brad and Fiona Street, who bought the business from its founders, Mary and Rob Woods, four years ago. “I worked for Mary for six years before purchasing the business,” says Brad. “We pretty much owe it all to Mary. She gave me my start, and she’s still involved to this day, handling our pricing and working behind the scenes. We’ve just tried to carry the torch forward.” This family-owned joinery manufacturing operation provides bespoke kitchen and custom cabinetry to the building trade and the public, for residential and light commercial new-build and renovation projects across Tauranga, the Bay of Plenty, and as far afield as Taupō, Coromandel and Ōhope. A fully qualified joiner by trade, Brad brings both firsthand expertise and a strong mentoring ethos to The Kitchen Business team of 16 staff. That commitment was recently recognised when Brad was named BCITO Joiner Employer of the Year 2024, thanks to a surprise nomination from one of his apprentices. “Our apprentice, Simon, entered me while he was away on a block course,” Brad says. “Next thing I know, BCITO flew me to Auckland, put us up, and handed me the award. It’s a real honour, but I don’t go chasing that kind of thing. I just try to do right by our people and our clients.” The award is a testament to Brad’s approach to mentorship and a healthy workplace culture with work-life balance for its team, which includes several team members that have been with the company for more than a decade. The Kitchen Business is built on excellent craftsmanship, and an established reputation for quality and dependability, a rarity in a high-churn industry. Their work is never modular or mass-produced.
