North Interiors JOINERY A new era in local design and manufacturing has begun with the launch of North Interiors. Under the new ownership of husbandand-wife team Mark Wigglesworth and Hazel Callen, the company (formerly Ultimate Kitchens) is bringing together decades of combined expertise to reshape the business, while maintaining its reputation for quality craftsmanship and innovative design solutions. Hazel brings over 15 years of industry experience across design, quantity surveying, and project management. Mark complements his wife’s design expertise with strong technology and business development skills, taking on a managerial role that focuses on innovation and operational efficiency. Together they make a strong team, supported by a small but highly skilled workforce of expert cabinetmakers, who bring more than five decades of combined experience. The result is a seamless blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern innovation. While the business already had a solid reputation, the new owners saw the potential for reinvention. They have undertaken a complete overhaul of operations, future-proofing the company and elevating its offering across the board. Central to this transformation is an $80,000 investment in a state-of-the-art software suite that integrates all aspects of a project, from initial quote to final visualisation. Mark says the system creates a ‘digital twin’ of each project, modelling every component with millimetre precision. “What our clients see on screen is exactly what they get,” he explains. “This technology eliminates guesswork and allows us to deliver both complex commercial fit-outs and family kitchens with equal precision.” Matching this digital upgrade is the installation of a high-tech CNC machine and edgebander, giving North Interiors full control over quality and timelines. Hazel says that what sets North Interiors apart is its flexibility and commitment to client-driven solutions. “We don’t follow a fixed house style,” she says. “We believe flexibility is our strength, and that every client, regardless of budget, deserves the same level of respect and care.” This adaptability is supported by the company’s embrace of lean manufacturing principles – a systematic approach that minimises waste and maximises value throughout production processes. The methodology has been integrated, not just into the manufacturing side, but across the entire business operation, emphasising continuous improvement and operational efficiency. The couple’s commitment to Northland runs deep. Mark’s family has lived in the region for over a century, a connection that fuels their business ethos. They are building strong regional partnerships, collaborating with local suppliers such as Enko (Whangārei) and Compac (Dargaville). The company serves both residential and commercial markets. Recent projects range from bespoke wardrobes for a Parnell penthouse to a full fit-out of the local Arvida clubhouse, complete with a custom-made gantry for the bar showcasing the versatility and scope of North Interiors’ capabilities. North Interiors has a showroom at 394 Kerikeri Road that serves as both inspiration hub and consultation space, displaying everything from complete kitchens, laundries, vanities and wardrobes to bespoke furniture pieces. Hazel says this allows clients to experience the quality and craftsmanship firsthand, working with the design team to bring their visions to life.
